A Public-School Administrator, our mom, assaulted and strangled by a student, needs our help!!
Four years ago today, our mother was the Dean of Students at a Massachusetts public school.
Four years ago today, our mother was assaulted and strangled by a student.
Four years ago today, our mom’s life flashed before her eyes and the world as she knew it changed forever.
Four years ago today, our mom (Liane Bachant Jalette) left the house excited for another day at school. On this day, she was casually dressed in jeans and a long sleeve pink Ivory Ella shirt to support her school’s dress down day supporting women and breast cancer.
Four years ago today, our mom went to work doing what she loved, working with children and preparing them for the future. She has always had a passion for helping others and wanting to make a difference. Our mom comes from a family of educators (and now I join the line as an educator); teaching is a big part of who we are. She has been changing the world one student at a time for 25 years. Now is the time for us to unite together and give back to her.
Our mom’s entire professional career has been as a teacher, coach and administrator in both public and private schools throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. On October 26, 2018 Liane Bachant Jalette of North Smithfield, RI, our mother, had her lifelong dream come to a screeching halt. She was viciously assaulted and strangled by a student.
Mom was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, post-concussion syndrome, PTSD, thoracic disc herniations, permanent nerve damage, and more. She suffers daily from headaches, numbness, pins and needles, dizziness and major balance issues (she has fallen twice in the past six months, one time breaking her foot), and she is in a tremendous amount of pain. If you look at her from the outside, she looks like your average middle-aged woman, but she is suffering physically and mentally.
Over the last four years, our mom has endured countless doctor’s appointments: psycho-therapy, CT scans, physical therapy, cortisone injections, facet injections, ablations, speech therapy, vestibular therapy, MRI’s, X-Rays, and so much more. Doctors have recommended some specific treatment options; however, workers compensation doesn’t cover those treatments. Your donations will help her be able to pay for those treatments and for unpaid bills.
Workers’ compensation is only paying mom 45% of her salary. Her case has been tied up in court for FOUR years, and it is taking a toll on her and our family. We are asking for your help. Mom needs a lifeline right now to help lessen the burden. She has never once complained about the pain she is in. We know she’s in pain, we see it on her face and how pale she gets from the pain as the day goes on, but you will never hear her complain about it; that’s not in her nature. She continues to care for us and provide all that she can for us.
This is not something, as a family, we ever imagined having to endure. My sister and I never imagined writing about our mom and the desperate needs of our family. This burden is unfathomable in so many ways, and it is for the long term. The medical treatments are necessary for the lifelong and life-altering injuries our mom has sustained, and the bills are piling up. The doctors have all agreed that our mom, age 53, is totally and permanently disabled. This devastating news has been beyond difficult for our mom to wrap her head around. She loves education. She loves working with kids, and in the blink of an eye, that was stripped away from her through no fault of her own.
Our mom has always put us first. When we are sick, mom takes care of us; when we need a ride, mom drives us; when we have extracurricular activities, mom is cheering us on; when we need a shoulder to lean on, mom is there. If you know me, you know my mom is my best friend, and she has never failed to teach or support my family and me. She has taught us that strength is not always about muscles. She has always believed in us and encouraged us to be ourselves. Mom is our hero and has shown us that women can be anything they want to be in life. Mom was always there to pick us up when we fell, and now it’s our turn to pick her up. Please consider donating to our cause.
Educators across the country are enduring and expected to do so much more than ever before. Awareness for the countless assaults educators across our nation are facing, like our mom, is happening at an alarming rate. It must stop. Maybe raising awareness of what happened to our mom will help others to speak out and get the support they need. At the very least, please share this story, my family’s story, my mom’s story.
No donation is too small; anything will be a tremendous help to our family. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read about our amazing mom and your willingness to help. We will be forever grateful, and we will absolutely give back once she is on her feet again.
