Education in Ethiopia
Donation protected
Hi my name is Ephrata Abate and I live in San Diego, California but I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I started this GoFundMe to raise money for a small school in Lalibela, Ethiopia. I went a few summers ago to visit where both my parents are from and learned alot about the culture and people. Lalibela is a small town in Northern Ethiopia with a population of about 15,000. My aunt, who has lived there all her life, started a small school once she saw that many children wanted to get education.
In first world countries alot of people complain about having to go to school or being tired of it, however, the children in Lalibela would do anything to go to school. My aunt's plan is to start these kids and their parents on a path of education, where they can learn and grow to become more than their already set paths of being farmers and household help. Every year the small school manages to get about 15 kids to graduate from kindergarten. The school charges $15 per kid per month to be able to pay for books, pencils, paper, and a teacher. However, 7 out of the 15 kids that graduate usually do not have the funds and get admitted for free by my aunt paying with her own money. The school actually usually starts with about 30 kids but half of them have to drop out because their family couldn’t afford it.
If we raised this money it would go to giving scholarships to the many kids who cannot afford the school as well as helping to pay for books and pencils and paper. The school is looking to be expanded so that these children could get to go to school for little to no money. This personally means a lot to me because my mom was one of those kids and through a lot of help and persistence she got her degrees and is now living a good life. When you ask the children what they want to be when they grow up they say doctors and scientists, I want to be able to give these kids a chance to get there.
I am sure the children and their parents as well as the school would be immensely thankful. While a few dollars to you might not seem much, to them it’s the chance to begin their life as a scholar.
