Education Fund for Collins' Kids

In memory of our beloved NOVICA artisan, Collins Korle , we want to pay for his two children, Kingsford and Candella, to go to school.

Collins died suddenly over the summer of 2016 from complications of his kidney disease. He was supported by NOVICA up until his death. He had a community of people helping him produce jewelry to sell, and our Ghana regional director Kwabena was especially involved in Collins' life. In the end though, Collins was discriminated against and denied treatment at a local hospital unless he paid $300 up front.

The average monthly salary in Ghana is about $320, so $300 is not something you'd have in your wallet or even in your house. Collins needed emergency care in the middle of the night and did not have that kind of money on him. He died waiting for the banks to open and a doctor to see him.

We are outraged that he died this way. However, we intend to give hope to his kids despite their father's untimely death. We want to pay for them to go school.

Collins has a six year old boy, Kingsford, and a four year old girl, Candella. Kingsford needs $4,440 in total to attend class up to the 9th grade. Candella will need $4,914. We believe that by paying for tuition up until the 9th grade, their mother will be able to pay for their high school (and maybe even college).

Kwabena tells us that Kingsford loves to play soccer and placed third in his class in the last set of exams he took. He wants to be a professional soccer player when he grows up. Candella's passions include singing and playing on the computer. We're told she placed first in her class on her recent exams, and she wants to become a doctor.

Kingsford and Candella's mother, Mercy, is a "petty trader", which means she basically buys and sells items in local markets. She is able to pay a small amount for their education, but she will be stretched very thin. We'd like to help her out.

The money we raise will be withdrawn by Roberto Milk, NOVICA Co-Founder/CEO, and given directly to the school to pay the class fees.

In addition, Collins' fellow artisans in Ghana will continue to produce his jewelry designs. His work will live on and the proceeds will go towards his children. You can buy jewelry in memory of Collins on the NOVICA site here .

We'll continue to check in on this family and help them survive without their father.
