Help Elon Reach Educational Equity

I have always sought out the education I wasn’t getting in the classroom. I have developed a sense of self by venturing outside of the bounds I was asked to stay within. Recently, I sent in a Pre-College application to a school I admire. I was accepted, but getting in wasn’t the only challenge: so is cost. Education is priceless and being armed with knowledge is the most powerful force I know.
Taking hold of my own education comes at a price. My parents have been champions for my schooling since I was in Pre K, and I want to lighten their load as much as I can. Asking for help isn’t easy, and creating this GoFundMe campaign makes me feel extremely vulnerable. Many of my peers at the private school I attend will never have to worry about covering the costs of their education, let alone ask others for money. I’m doing this because I believe that I deserve equal opportunity to pursue my education as my wealthier peers.
Pre-College gives me a space to engage with my passions: writing and the exploration of black identities. I would be on campus for four weeks taking an intensive poetry course and a class focusing on the way in which systematic racism negatively affects the health/wellbeing of black people. Public health and psychology are majors I’d like to pursue after I graduate, and pre-college would give me a way to work with these subjects now.
I don’t want cost to be the reason I’m hesitant to attend this program. I am hoping that my community can help me in reaching my goal of $9,487 through this Go Fund Me page. I have already raised $6,353 through a small scholarship, generous donations, and parent contribution. This last $3,134 is the home stretch. This program means a lot to me, and I’m so happy to know that there are people around me who support my endeavors, whether through a small donation or simply words of encouragement.
The hard deadline for reaching my goal is May 25th, 2018. To thank donors who contribute $75 and over I have curated a few packages! I have a selection of original artwork that I have created which can be found on my Facebook page (Elon Collins) or my Instagram (@elonisnotmusky). Please contact me to identify which pieces you would like shipped. Also, do not let the $75 compel you to donate more than you can, every cent is progress.
