… and publication of “A Sexologist in Nazi Berlin,” a biography of my uncle Lutz aka Dr. Ludwig Levy-Lenz, who performed the first sex-change operations and was the Chief Medical Officer at the Sexual Institute Berlin
I am a Child of Holocaust Survivors and the author of “A Sexologist in Nazi Berlin,” a biography of my uncle Lutz aka Dr. Ludwig Levy-Lenz, who performed the first sex-change operations and was the Chief Medical Officer at the Sexual Institute Berlin, where he treated and worked with many important and famous figures in the late 1920s to early 1930s, including the Commander of the SA, Ernst Röhm, a closeted homosexual who became the victim of Hitler’s wrath in a putsch known as The Night of the Long Knives. My book tells his story and the backstory of events depicted in “Cabaret,” which was itself based on some of the “Berlin Stories,” written by Christopher Isherwood, writer-in-residence at the Institute.
Sadly, most of the research and work done by the Institute was destroyed during the Nazis’ rise to power. Lutz is listed as a gynecologist for the institute where he helped and participated in some of the research of the most taboo topics in the world at the time. Lutz was one of the few surgeons to perform the first gender reassignment surgery in 1931 on Dora Richter (portrayed in the film “The Danish Girl”). He served as a surgeon, gynecologist and therapist to the patients of the institute.
Here is his story – the book is called A Sexologist in Nazi Berlin; Sex, love, gender transition and Hitler’s Whore of Babylon
/ by Noë Gold and Dr. Ludwig Levy-Lenz, and it is a work-in-progress containing his writing from his own "Memoirs of a Sexologist" coupled with my commentary and research looking back from the perspective of a scholar in the 21st Century. It has been optioned as a tv series but is now in “turnaround” looking for a new, enlightened — and hopefully well-connected — producer and a prestigious publishing house that will produce the hardcover tome that this story deserves. My mission is to create The Lutz Foundation, to further his work and amplify his teachings and the gospel of his mentor Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld.
And that's where you come in! Your donation will help me to create the nonprofit The Lutz Foundation, allowing me to finish the book and produce the movie so that this story, “A Sexologist in Nazi Berlin” a "novelization," meant to be published in combination with a film project that has been in development. It is a work-in-progress that is now only a dream – and that is the reason for this GoFundMe – to help me continue with my research and make the dream a reality.
I hope, with your help the Lutz Foundation will allow me to continue my Uncle Lutz' work by funding a grant that would help me to complete the book and the research, and get it to a major publisher in a hard-copy edition that will be all-inclusive.

More on the story of my Uncle Lutz
Christopher Isherwood was an artist-in-residence of the Sexual Institut and is a character in the story:
My uncle Dr. Ludwig Levy-Lenz, a sexologist, and surgeon at the Sexual Institute for Berlin, who treated and worked with many important and famous figures in the late 1920s to early 1930s. He was involved in historic procedures and groundbreaking ideas. Sadly, most of the research and work done by the institute was destroyed during the Nazis’ rise to power. Lutz is listed as a gynecologist for the institute where he helped with and participated in some of the research of the most taboo topics in the world at the time. Lutz was one of the few surgeons to perform the first gender reassignment surgery in 1931 on Dora Richter (aka “The Danish Girl”). He served as a surgeon, gynecologist and therapist to the patients of the institute.
The institute would ultimately house an immense library on sexuality, gathered over many years and including rare books and diagrams and protocols for male-to-female (MTF) surgical transition. In addition to psychiatrists for therapy, Hirschfeld had hired Ludwig Levy-Lenz, a gynecologist. Together, with surgeon Erwin Gohrbandt, they performed male-to-female surgery called Genitalumwandlung—literally, “transformation of genitals.”
Here is his story – the book is called "A Sexologist in Nazi Berlin," and it contains his writing from his own "Memoirs of a Sexologist" coupled with my commentary and research looking back from the perspective of a scholar in the 21st Century. My mission is to create The Lutz Foundation, to further his work and amplify his teachings and the gospel of his mentor Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld.
We Begin in 1928, at the height of the Institut fur Sexualwissenshaft and just prior to the rise of the Nazi party. Germany was still in a period of sexual and cultural exploration prior to the censorship and restrictions placed. Along with his mentor, Magnus Hirschfield, Lutz, and his fellow, mostly Jewish doctors, compiled research and helped pioneer the German study of Sex in the early 20th century.
1933: On Lutz’s way out of the Institute on the street he passes by Nazi soldiers, members of Hitler’s youth, men and woman wearing pink triangles, and golden stars on their clothes. He turns around to see two large troop trucks pull up outside the Sexual Institute of Berlin and the soldiers storm into the building. They tear the institute apart and bring the research, images, files and books outside to Opera Square. Joseph Goebbels, the head of propaganda for the Nazi party, gives a speech and burns the books in the square in front of a cheering crowd.
Marya Goldwasser, Lutz’s wife
Now we will go back to 1928 and explore the day-to-day events over the final five years of the Institute’s life. Every day Lutz would deal with a plethora of things. He would treat his clients both physically and mentally. The list of clients he compiled over the years contains a cast of fascinating characters: Nazis, famous authors, actors, dancers, prostitutes he served as the medical officer and historical figures who became the first of their kind to be documented.
As Lutz continues his time at the Institute, he slowly expands and grows in his view towards abortion, transgender and other taboo ideas, the most critical parts of his life as a doctor and an advocate. During his years at the institute, Lutz was in a city that was considered to be on par if not further within a sexual revolution. There are an estimated 50 gay and trans-only clubs in Berlin before the ascension of the Nazi party.
These places were frequented by the residents and doctors of the Institute.
Some of the key characters in this story are Magnus Hirschfeld, Lutz’s mentor and the founder of the institute, Ernst Röhm, Christopher Isherwood and my Tante Mary (née Goldwasser), thirty years his junior. She met Lutz in 1932, and they were married by 1933, soon after, the Institute was destroyed, and they fled to France to join Magnus who had already been exiled.
After Magnus’s death in 1935, Lutz returned to Germany until 1939 when his German citizenship was revoked. He got to Cairo, by virtue of a diplomatic connection and he was Omar Sharif’s next-door neighbor, establishing a practice there, transitioning to plastic surgery at his Cairo Office, the Clinique De Berlin.
I have been invited by to participate in an exhibition – The Active Museum Fascism and Resistance and the Coordination Office Stolpersteine Berlin are currently working on the antisemitic housing policy during the National Socialist era, a hitherto little-known part of the persecution – launched in October 2023 and I am hoping you will help me to fund a project that would be in sync with this mission, or better yet, create an exhibition based on my uncle’s story, which would allow me to complete my Uncle’s biography and help fulfill his mission. Not only do I have many pictures that the Active Museum requested but also many documents related to my family’s building and also numerous photos of Lutz and Mary and an elaborate storyboard done by my son Dylan Zvi Goldwasser for German producers of a project based on my book.
“A Sexologist in Nazi Berlin” is a "novelization," meant to be published in combination with a film project that has been in development. It is a work-in-progress that is referred to in my copyright info, though it will give you a good insight into my storytelling process – and that is the reason for this GoFundMe – to help me continue with my research and get the book published with a reputable house:
