On Monday, August 10th El Camino Real Charter teachers of Woodland Hills, California began distance teaching online and a parent took a photo of an educator wearing an "I Can't Breathe" shirt while she was introducing herself to her students.
The teacher, along with several other educators from the site, was participating in a national movement of educators called Black Lives Matter at Schools and their "Year of Purpose" to go "Black to School". The parent posted the teacher's picture online, along with criticism of her syllabus which she had worked hard to decolonize and make anti-racist. Parents quickly started circulating the post on Facebook and other social media sites, specifically many known alt-right white supremacist groups, where it became a witch-hunt to get her fired and revoke her credential for pushing political viewpoints. People started flooding her email with nasty messages and threatened her safety. The teacher has been threatened through numerous emails and social media posts and has had to re-locate for the safety of herself, her daughter, and her pets.
We are raising money for her re-location fees, and for her family's safety. She may also need mental health resources and other needs taken care of during this difficult time. Not only did this parent violate the policies set-forth by the school to not take pictures or record classes, but they are trying to bully this teacher into not being able to speak about these significant issues. Speaking about equality and racial justice is something ALL educators should be doing and they should not be targeted for teaching about humanity. Please help us stand in solidarity with this teacher and protect her for standing up for the right reasons. We, as educators, will not be silenced. #BLM

Thank you all for your generous support. As each day goes by, there is more information and more to deal with. We see that we have many supporters who believe Black Lives Matter and that racial and social justice should be taught in the classroom. The educator will be withdrawing the funds directly to be used for hotel costs (for herself, her daughter, and her pets), meals, mental health services (psychiatrists, therapists), child care, medical costs for stress, etc..
