Imagine a world free from Alzheimer's disease and dementia. This is my goal.
I am Tanya Franks, a British actress. This is me with my step-father, Derek, who had Alzheimer’s Disease, the most common form of dementia, for 11 years before we lost him in March 2024. My mother, Anne, was his 24/7 carer for 9 and a half of those years. Due to our experience as a family living with dementia, and also through close friends having similar experiences, I created my non-profit company Elimtia Ltd
.
Our family photo is just a mere representation of all the families that have lost, and are losing, loved ones to this extremely cruel disease.
With close to 1 million people living with dementia in the UK alone, it is now our biggest killer. This disease was first diagnosed by neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906, and here we are nearly 120 years later. I am not content to sit and wait for a cure, we need to pull together and explore if prevention could be the actual remedy.
