Education Fund for Sobha Chepang

Hello and Namaste,

We are Jay and Kusum from Stories of Nepal and we are raising funds for Sobha Chepang to continue her education.

Meet Shova Chepang. Sobha is 18 years old young girl with many dreams. One is to complete her education. Her biggest fear is that she will have to get married like her sisters if she cannot continue her education.

Sobha lives with her family in Chautara, Rapti Municipality 11 which is 30KM north of the east/west highway of Khurkhure in the Chitwan district.

Sobha completed her Secondary Education Examination (SEE) in 2076 from Khairahani School, Khairahani-6 Chitwan. Furthermore, she completed high school at Bhuwanisankar Multiple College in Chitwan. Her major subject is English.

She wishes to join public service after she completes her undergraduate degree.

According to the recent Nepal Living Standard Survey, almost 90 % of Chepangs live

below the poverty line and have only a 23% literacy rate. Settlements located in remote areas, and poverty are a few reasons behind these low literacy rates.

Most Chepang villages have only a primary school and students need to travel walk several hours every day, usually over sloped and difficult terrain, to attend secondary-level schools. Acquiring basic secondary-level education has also been a herculean task for Chepang community children.

Despite several difficulties, Shova has managed to complete her high school education in Nepal.

Until now, her father Amber Chepang has supported her education with great difficulty. But now he is unable to due to loss of wages and weak financial capacity. He does not have any regular source of income except subsistence agriculture and some livestock.

Sobha wants to continue her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Bhuwanisankar Multiple College. B.ED program for 4 years in Chitwan.
