HELP THE ROMA ASHKALI AND EGYPTIAN PUPILS AND STUDENTS IN KOSOVO TO GET A FAIR ACCESS TO EDUCATION - COVID19 CRISIS URGENCY
The Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities, some of the most vulnerable ones in Kosovo, have been highly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The three communities depend mostly from precarious and informal jobs. Due to the situation and measures put in place, they have not been able to work and provide for their families[1]. Pupils and students have been even more affected by the pandemic, since they could not attend school and means for online education are scarce.
With the number of cases increasing and the situation not getting better, it is clear that online-schooling will continue with the coming new school year[2]. In that context, the organisation Roma Versitas Kosovo (RVK), will need all the help they can get to ensure that every student will be able to follow the online classes[3]. It is a necessity as many of them do not possess any computers at home to pursue their studies.
This is the reason why we are calling for donations. The money collected will be used to buy at least 30 laptops or tablets so that the pupils and students can follow online education programs.
RVK with the support of GAIA Kosovo , has delivered supplies (food, hygiene kits) to help more than 100 most vulnerable families during April and May 2020, and more than 500 people to get access to basic hygiene packages (gloves, masks). The action has been possible with donations from different people and organizations.
GAIA Kosovo and Roma Versitas Kosovo (RKV) are organizations working on the field of education. RKV's main aim is to help Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian university students in their access to education. They have done a very intensive work and spent a lot of efforts to adapt to the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis situation. GAIA Kosovo provides non-formal educational activities for children and teenagers in Gracanica. Activities had to stop during the school year due to the situation.
Thank you for helping the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian pupils and students in Kosovo to get a fair access to education and please feel free to share this call.
