Education for Refugees in Athens

Please help us raise funds to support educational initiatives at the Jafra Foundation in Greece, a grassroots organization founded and led by Palestinian refugees from Syria, which serves a diverse migrant and refugee community in Athens.   We have done workshops and have visited Jafra, and see firsthand the great work that they do.

At a moment when it is urgent to once again resist US war-making, it is imperative to think about what it means to express solidarity with refugees. Jafra organizers in Athens are leading initiatives that challenge humanitarian models of aid and emphasizing education as a tool for refugees to make change in their own lives and communities.

Jafra relies solely on volunteers that work to benefit the communities’ interests, achieve social justice, and strengthen social solidarity. In addition.  They aim to improve the living conditions of refugees in Greece through the involvement in development projects.  Funds raised from the fundraiser will support educational initiatives like:

Womens’ programme: A project to empower women through a variety of activities including vocational training and education.
• Sewing, knitting, and embroidery trainings
• Hairdressing training
• English classes
• Yoga and Aerobics
• First aid trainings

Children’s programme: Recreational and psychosocial support activities to encourage their talents, and contribute to the development of a generation which is self-confident and to reduce the negative effects of war.
• Art classes
• Photography class
• English class
• Nursery
• Reading and storytelling group

Youth Programme: Youth activities which aim to support youth to develop their skills and involve them in collective action and encourage self-reliance and self-confidence
• Theatre group
• Folkloric Palestinian Dance – “Dabke”
• English classes
• Vocational trainings
• Cultural space

We are grateful for any amount that you can give to support their wonderful work!  Because Greece is not a country supported by this platform, I will withdraw the funds personally when the campaign is over in mid-February, and then send them directly via my bank account to one of my colleagues at Jafra.  Here is a video clip from a volunteer about the work of Jafra:
