Education for Healthcare Ethics

Donation protected
I’ve been quietly working toward something very important to me, and to the future of healthcare in America...and today I received an acceptance letter from Columbia University to attend their program, and obtain a master of science degree in Bioethics.

Bioethics is the study of medical and biological ethics, and I have spent the last year developing a plan to spearhead the movement toward quality human healthcare versus quantity-based healthcare that allows administrative, non-clinical personnel have a heavy hand in clinical decision making relative to direct patient care. This, in turn, maximizes profits but not the quality of care.

The reason I have pursued the program at Columbia, specifically, is because it is uniquely individualized to allow the student to pair with a mentor, and explore their own path with an individual education plan to help create the “leaders of tomorrow”. The program allows for individualized selection of an ethical pathway, and provides the personnel and resources necessary to help this person meet their goals, and make a difference.

It is an unfortunate reality that in order to obtain an education at any university, the costs are astronomical in comparison to what we bring home with the average income. Now, I sit here, with a full time job, a husband, two children and a mortgage for the roof over our heads...and I have the audacity to make a page requesting donations for more education at a highly prestigious university, and you may wonder, where do I get the nerve?

I ask you to consider that no one ever made it somewhere important in their lives without the support and assistance of other people. In order to achieve something great, we need to obtain the appropriate connections and resources, and that's a plain and simple truth. In this world there are people who have a certain spark. There are people who have the ability to make a real difference. I believe that I could be one of those people in the realm of healthcare ethics. Through hard work, persistence, imagination and genuine investment, I have earned a chance to obtain the connections and resources I need to ignite my spark.

With the admission decision today came the requirement to supply $2,000 as a mandatory deposit toward tuition. This deposit would secure enrollment and failure to provide would result in forfeit of admission. Under no circumstances can this be waived.

have taken pictures of all of my scrubs, my wedding ring, my mothers day gifts of a Cricut and hot-press that have allowed me to start the recent "side-gig" of shirt making, in efforts to set up a cyber-garage sale to pay for the deposit. We are at this juncture because we live paycheck-to-paycheck. And although Mike and I have both accepted new positions that will hopefully allow us to save for our family, we currently have no cushion at all, and due to the job switches, we've actually missed a few bills waiting for the pay schedules to adjust.

We do not have the option for charging it on a credit card and do not have family with means to offer financial support, and if selling my stuff allows for a better future for not just me, but my family and potentially the humans in our healthcare system - I am willing to part with whatever I have to.

But, if you're still reading, and if you know me and know that this could be something really huge, I humbly request any support you're able to offer. I have two weeks and only the hope that a little miracle will come my way and help me obtain this honorable degree and pursue healthcare ethics in our society.

Thank you for reading, and thank you from the bottom of my soul if you choose to contribute.

love to all.
