PROJECT … This month, our Seeds of Exchange fundraising partnership is in India.
In the desert of Rajasthan, construction is underway for a world-class science center that will welcome children living in poverty to dream big, learn, and be a part of the extraordinary community of Vatsalya.
In this campaign, we aim to raise $2,000 of the science center’s construction costs.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO ME … This greatly matters to me because I have had the joy of spending time in India with this community. Vatsalya 's co-founder, Jaimala Gupta, has been a DEAR FRIEND and SOUL SISTER for well over a decade. I TRUST AND LOVE HER GREATLY.
Over many steaming cups of chai tea and I’ve heard firsthand stories of struggles and strength, and witnessed her fierce vision and dogged determination to make life better for these children and the surrounding community. Her inspired action and commitment makes life better for kids who – without her organization – would be vulnerable targets for human trafficking and enslavement … with very few options for a future with hope and security. She has created a refuge plentyFULL with peace and possibility for the next generation of kids in India. She is someone with whom we are blessed and privileged to collaborate, to be sure.
WHY THIS IS SO IMPACTFUL & IMPORTANT … How often do WE get to be a part of offering a fresh start to kiddos in the rural and impoverished communities of Rajasthan, India? (Lucky you … me … us!) Many of the kiddos in the surrounding rural communities are impoverished and without exposure and education through this science center and the community of Vatsalya , their futures are, honestly, bleak. But, together, we can change that! Indeed, this is a life-changing and unprecedented opportunity for children who are invisible to many. It is but one more way my sister, Jaimala, and her team at Vatsalya are looking to serve those closest to them with tangible - and great big! – love. (The fact that “vatsalya” is Sanskrit for “unconditional motherly love” is fitting, indeed.)
TIME-TESTED & COMPREHENSIVE … Vatsalya ’s focus has been on creating hopeFULL futures for children, women, and communities in India who are most marginalized, at risk, and underprivileged. Their initiatives are time-tested and comprehensive, working in Jaipur, India and in the surrounding communities in the arenas of micro-enterprise, public health, human trafficking, education, and ecology. Highlights to date:
1 - Created a carbon neutral campus (“Udayan”), home to nearly 1,000 children to date
2 - Supported livelihoods of over 1,200 underprivileged women including commercial sex workers
3 - Saved more than 15,000 children from death due to malnutrition
4 - Spread HIV/AIDS awareness and conducted health checkups of thousands

2 - NICF (Namaste India Children’s Fund) is the US-based non-profit partner for Vatsalya, allowing for US donors to receive a tax-deduction. Funds can be donated from anywhere in the world with a credit card. Want to write a check? Great! Make it payable to NICF and shoot me an email – I’ll get you the address and add your donation to the campaign total!
3 – The overall project fundraising goal is $60,000, of which over half has been raised. We know that there are people who are passionate about science, education, children, and human rights – all of which this project impacts! If you or someone you know would like to make a big dent in this project’s remaining funds to be raised of $28,000, please contact me.
ABOUT THE SCIENCE CENTER …
1 - This center will be housed in the school on campus at Vatsalya’s Udayan home, through which all our children, the children of other schools in nearby community, and other people in our rural community will get exposure and learning and exploring opportunity.
2 - FRANCIS ARNOLD is a Nobel prize winning scientist from Caltech who has been a long-time friend of Vatsalya’s.
3 - The science center will be an integral part of Udayan’s school, which currently runs through 10th grade. Vatsalya’s Udayan campus is carbon neutral, having continuous off the grid solar power supply for all electricity needs, solar thermal and biogas power for all cooking needs, organic farms growing our own seasonal fresh vegetables, dairy where there are currently 6 happy cows who live in their large enclosure and provide fresh milk for the children; along with the latest project of a pond liner connected to multiple rooftops for rainwater harvesting now in its first monsoon season.
