Green Man Growing is a regenerative market garden at Village Farm, East Portlemouth, South Devon.
I established Green Man Growing as the culmination of a 5 year growing journey beginning in British Columbia, Canada in 2020.
Inspired by the Devonshire Green Man, universal symbol of regeneration, my intention is to provide fresh, seasonal produce locally, whilst encouraging as many as possible to join a movement towards food sovereignty and re-enchantment with nature.
Situated in the heart of the beautiful South Devon National Landscape, I have secured 50% funding from Farming in Protected Landscapes to work towards Education, Efficiency and Sustainability goals in my second season.
Your support in matching FiPL's funding will allow me provide for the following:
- Tools for volunteer groups/educational visits
- 3-bay composting unit
- Vermicomposter as an educational tool
- Propagation/storage shed
- Solar power pack
- Compost loo facilities for visitors
- Crop mesh for pest protection
- Info panel to interpret our spectacular view of the South Hams agricultural landscape
Education: As a former History teacher, working closely with the @Soil-ED campaign to get farming, food and sustainability onto the national curriculum, I’m really excited to be working towards using Green Man Growing as a launchpad for educational outreach around all three subjects.
With FiPL’s Educational Visits funding and your help, I will be able to bring visiting groups onto the land to share my methods, intentions and vision for growing food locally.
Efficiency: Bringing together a market garden business as a one-man team on a shoe-string budget has been a challenge and a labour of love this year. Acquiring new tools, composting facilities and a central structure for propagation, storage and general organisation all on-site will be a massive boost for efficiency in my second season.
Sustainability: Composting facilities, compost toilets, crop protection and solar power will allow me to continue growing sustainably whilst building health and resilience into the soil.
I’m so excited to share more of my plans for the future with all of you and thankful for all of your support so far.
Under the auspices of the Green Man, we’ll keep on growing together.
