Fondée à l’été 2020, Diverses Syllabes est une maison d’édition féministe intersectionnelle et queer, dont la création s’inscrit comme une première étape dans la construction du monde d’après.
La fondation de Diverses syllabes résonne avec le mouvement Black Lives Matter et la volonté de repenser les lieux de création et de diffusion suivant les dénonciations d’inconduites et de violences sexuelles. Ces remises en question, qui ont fortement ébranlé le Québec au printemps et à l’été 2020, doivent mener à des actions, dont celle d’accueillir, de mettre en valeur, de faire résonner d’autres voix. Ceci exige d’aller au-delà de la reconstruction et de la restructuration des institutions déjà en place : il est indispensable de construire du nouveau. Et pour y arriver, il faut en avoir les moyens.
Le milieu littéraire est particulièrement précaire, en raison de son sous-financement et d’une absence de politique entourant le statut d’écrivain·e. Les auteur·ices sont régulièrement invité·es, voire contraint·es, à faire du travail gratuit, en échange d’une supposée visibilité. Cette situation affecte davantage les personnes racisées, les femmes et les minorités de genre, dont le temps est déjà alloué à une multitude d’autres responsabilités (souvent elles aussi non-rémunérées) ou dont la situation financière ne leur permet pas d’écrire ou de performer bénévolement.
Diverses Syllabes souhaite, en plus de donner la parole aux femmes racisées et aux minorités de genre, leur offrir les moyens d’exercer librement leur art en allouant une rémunération de base de 1000$ dès la signature du contrat pour les ouvrages signés par un-e auteurice et en doublant le pourcentage des ventes habituellement accordés aux auteur·ices. Sa fondatrice, Madioula Kébé-Kamara, conçoit et espère cette maison d’édition comme un espace de création, de diffusion et de réflexion sécuritaire et solidaire dédié aux artistes de la diversité œuvrant dans le milieu littéraire.

À quoi serviront les 60 000$ ?
- À offrir un salaire décent aux acteur·ices de la maison d’édition (réviseur·euse, éditeur·ice, auteur·ice, artiste visuel·le, directeur·ice, etc.) pour qu’iels puissent se concentrer sur leur travail.
- À réduire les heures de bénévolat nécessaires avant d’accéder à une visibilité.
- À publier cinq à six ouvrages par des auteur·ices de couleurs ou des minorités de genre sur deux ans.
- À garantir notre indépendance jusqu’à ce que nous soyons en mesure de demander des subventions gouvernementales, soit après avoir publié cinq œuvres par trois auteur·ices différent·es.
- À entamer des discussions sur les questions de races, de genres et de représentations.
- À diversifier le paysage culturel québécois.

Founded in the summer of 2020, “Diverses Syllabes” is an intersectional and queer feminist publishing house. Its development is considered to be an important attribute in promoting inclusiveness and a first step in building the near and distant future.
The principles and values that constitute the core of the project resonate with the cultural and socio-political Black Lives Matter movement and the desire to question the dedicated spaces to creation and diffusion following the recent wave of misconduct and sexual violence denunciations.
These collective and individual challenges, which have incredibly shaken the Quebec community in the spring and summer of 2020, must lead to concrete actions, including those of welcoming, promoting and elevating the voices of those whom are often ignored and/or discriminated. This requires going beyond the reconstruction and restructuring of present, established and known institutions. We believe it is absolutely essential and critical to initiate and embrace disassociation in order to welcome a new literary era and reinvest in our artistic and cultural collective spaces. However, the accomplishment of such an ambitious achievement vastly depends on supportive and financial resources.
The literary environment is particularly precarious due to many reasons such as the commonly experienced underfunding of emerging projects and the absence of policy surrounding the status of writers and their contributors. Those involved in various publishing processes are regularly invited, or even forced to do free work, in exchange of supposed visibility. This situation further affects Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), women, gender non conforming people, whose time is already allocated to a multitude of other responsibilities (often also unpaid) and/or whose financial situation doesn’t allow them to write or perform voluntarily without any remuneration.
In addition to giving a voice to BIPOC women, gender and other minorities (LGBTQIA2-S+), ‘’Diverses Syllabes’’ wishes to offer them the means to freely practice their art by allocating a starting funding of 1,000$ upon signing the contract for literary works signed by their assigned and respective authors and by doubling the percentage of sales usually granted to said authors. Madioula Kébé-Kamara, founder and director of ‘’Diverses Syllabes’’, hopes this publishing house to be representative of a safe space for creation, promotion and united reflection dedicated to marginalized and diversified artists working in the literary field.

- To publish five to six literary works written by BIPOC women, gender and other minorities (LGBTQIA2-S+) over the course of two years.
- To guarantee our self-sufficiency and independence until we are able to apply for government grants, that is, after having published five to six works by three different authors.
- To initiate discussions on issues of race, gender and representation.
- To diversify the Quebec artistic and cultural pond.
