Hello! Last September, my sister and I adopted this sweet little girl from our local Humane Society. Edith (Edie) is a three pound Chihuahua Maltese mix, who could not be sold by her breeder due to some joint issues. At the time of adoption we thought her main health problem was shoulder related, and that as long as we kept her weight at less than five pounds she would not have any discomfort. Around March, however, we started to notice Edith was dragging one or both of her back legs around from time to time. This continued to become a more frequent occurrence, and though she showed no signs of being in pain we decided to get her looked at.
After seeing our local vet, and then getting referred to a specialist, we learned that Edie has patellar luxation in both of her back legs. This means that her knee caps are not attached as they should be, but instead move around her legs. Below are her X-rays, which show how far her knee caps have moved from their original location. Without surgery to correct this Edie will develop painful arthritis, or possible amputation, which isn't ideal in any dog but especially not in one so tiny.
Edie is set to have her left leg worked on in September, followed by her right leg a month later. These two procedures will run us about $3500. We have worked our budget backwards and forwards, and there is no way we can make this work without help. We have looked into Care Credit, but the interest is so high we would rather avoid going that route if possible. So we are biting the bullet, and asking for help.
We can cover half of the surgery fees, without stretching our budget too thin. We are asking, if you are moved to do so, to please help us cover the second half so Edie can get both legs repaired on schedule. Any little bit helps, and we will be forever grateful for any donations made.
