A 62-year-old woman in an insane asylum closes her eyes and becomes a 28-year-old, stand-up comedian with everyone in the audience being part of her imagination.

Inspired by personal experience, the delivery (not material) of Chappelle and Rock, Christopher Nolan films, Netflix’s Russian Doll and HBO's Hacks, Before The Drugs Kick In is an intimate blend of stand-up, theatre and time travel starring NYC comedian and actress Maria DeCotis (Broadway, Vogue, Rolling Stone) as comedian Lynn T. Walsh.

The play is dedicated to anyone, especially young mothers of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, who society wrote off as crazy instead of giving them an opportunity to live.

Hello, my name is Mike Lemme. I'm the writer, director and producer of the new play Before The Drugs Kick In. It has taken 20 years for me to figure out how to tell this story on stage and this version finally feels right. Everything about creating this play has felt natural. This is what I'm supposed to be doing right here and now.

Before The Drugs Kick In made its world premiere at the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, to multiple five and four star reviews while being nominated for two of the biggest awards at the festival, BBC Writersroom Popcorn Award for Best New Writing and the Mental Health Foundation Fringe Award.

After all the success in Edinburgh, I truly believe the sky's the limit for this show. With your support, we can bring Before The Drugs Kick In to a theatre in New York City where it belongs. Right now, the goal is to put on at least 21 performances to qualify for Drama Desk Awards and to continue to build on the momentum we created in Edinburgh!
