Hello, we are the Mulder kids.
Our names are Alexis, Madison, and Jake, and our family has been victim to the recent flooding that occurred in the Sumas Prairie. We have decided to start this Go Fund Me to help our parents rebuild their farm and home. Our parents, Ed and Hester Mulder, started chicken farming in Sumas Prairie in 1994. The Prairie has been home for 27 years, and they have put an unimaginable amount of hard work and care into building a productive and successful farm to share with and take care of their children on.
On November 16, 2021, we were given an evacuation notice for the flooding that was happening in our area. The sisters packed a few changes of clothes and the dogs and the cats, and then headed to safety. Our parents stayed behind to do the best they could to prepare for the high water and once the water reached a dangerous height they grabbed some clothing, pictures, and a few family treasures. So much was left behind.
The house and our barns are currently flooded in 5 feet of water, destroying everything in our home and horribly leaving our chickens to drown. When we packed that small amount of clothing and evacuated, none of us ever would have imagined that this would have happened to our home. The devastation upon seeing the place we grew up in be taken over by water is one that we cannot put into words. We are inconceivably heart broken.
Sadly, we are not covered by insurance. Sumas Prairie lies upon a floodplain, so insurance companies do not sell flood insurance for this area. This means that the reconstruction of every barn, every piece of equipment inside, the house that my parents just excitedly renovated this past summer, and everything inside to be solely paid out of pocket. This expense is achingly and wildly huge.
We’re asking for a little bit of financial aid for our parents, Ed and Hester, to rebuild their lives. It’s the least we can do for what they’ve done for us. Any amount will help and be eternally appreciated.
