Edgar Sevier Justus, III  July 14, 1950-November 4, 2020

Edgar Sevier Justus, III, loving husband, beloved friend and iconic leader of the Rhondels died of a heart attack at his home today.  Edgar started his music career in the 1960’s in Richmond, Virginia performing with a variety of bands, including:  The Candy Men, The Del Rays, Spanky, Fingal’s Cave, Vintage Pointe and Splinter.  He joined Bill Deal & The Rhondels in 1978, taking over lead of the group in 1983 after Bill Deal’s departure.  Edgar continued performing with The Rhondels, an East Coast music tradition playing Beach music, Top 40 covers and original music for the past 40 years, intermittently performing with two smaller acts he created with fellow band members, The Dudes and The Surf Chickens.

Edgar met his wife, Angie, when playing at the Jolly Lobster in Newport News in the early 80’s.  A few weeks later, while performing at Rogues Gallery in Virginia Beach, where Angie was a bartender, their flirtation continued.   That night, the Rogues staff and Edgar and Angie, went on to the Cape Henry Club, an after-hours bar above Worrell Brothers.  After dropping off the friends, Edgar asked Angie if he could kiss her, and the rest is history of 40 years together.  They married in April of 1982 and wanted to do so on April Fool’s day, but Angie’s mom would not hear of it.  The couple has a son, Edgar S. Justus, IV, who lives in Hawaii.

Over the years, Edgar and Angie have kept the Rhondels performing up and down the East Coast, keeping the Beach Music tradition alive for generations, while integrating Top 40 dance music and oldies into their repertoire.   Edgar has written several songs over his music career, including 12 in the last month.  One recent song “Crazy” illustrates the feelings of so many of us over this past year of hatred, a pandemic and fear.   “Dance to Us”, “Blue Sky”, “Fly Away” are some of the other songs written in the last month.  One must wonder if Edgar knew something we didn’t.   His legacy is his music and his family, and that never fading smile and jovial laughter.  He was always a friend to his fellow musicians and a caring friend.  A gentle giant, Edgar has left a void in our hearts and the East Coast music industry.

All funds donated will go directly to Edgar's wife Angie to help cover the medical and funeral expenses.
