Even before Eden came into this world she was a fighter. There was no way of knowing how much of a battle this little spirit would have to face to come here to earth and then continue to fight once here. The following will tell you how much this baby’s spirit has a will to live even when the body is weak. At around 18 weeks of pregnancy Lisa was told that her babies had Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome and that 'Baby B', Eden, also had a heart arrhythmia with a significantly lower heart rate than her sister. Her lack of growth, compared to her sister's, was a major concern and the doctors thought they would need to bring her early. She fought to prove herself and after close monitoring, around 32 weeks, was given the green light to “keep baking”.
On August 25, Emersyn and Eden were born and two days later Lisa and Matt were told that Eden had a complete heart block. This meant that as one side of her heart contracts and sends a message for the other side to contract that message is not received. The doctors knew Eden's heart would eventually need a pace maker to regulate these mixed signals but hoped it would be years down the road.
On March 7th, at just 6 months of age, Eden faced the biggest hurdle of her short life. For reasons still unknown to doctors Eden went into full cardiac arrest. Monday night Lisa found Eden struggling to breath, she then went limp in her mother’s arms and Matt began performing chest compressions until paramedics arrived. On the way to the hospital Eden was shocked three times and given epinephrine to get her tiny heart working again. Once more, with the help of skilled emergency professionals, her amazingly strong spirit fought to overcome the weaknesses of her body.
Upon arriving at the hospital, doctors found she had alarmingly high levels of acid in her blood stream which meant her body had been starved of oxygen. The concern now was what damage had been done to her brain during that time. She was put under heavy sedation and placed on a ventilator to allow her body to rest from the trauma. Yesterday, Eden proved her resilience yet again when her MRI revealed an “unremarkable” brain scan meaning there was no remarkable brain swelling or damage detected in the images. There is no question that this extraordinary little spirit has had Heaven’s hand in her journey here on earth. There are still many hurdles this little baby will have to face in the near future and throughout her life. Once stable she will be flown to Salk Lake City where she will have open heart surgery to place a pace maker to regulate her heart function. Eden and her family have felt the love and faith of all those who have heard her story and prayed in their behalf.
This fund was created for all those asking how to support the Smith family and wanting to give to Eden. No flowers are allowed in her hopsital room currently but cards of encouragement certainly are! Ultimately, the best support for Eden and her parents would be anything to help Eden get the strong heart to match that strong spirit of hers. While she is going to have a beautiful view from the top of the mountain she's climbing right now, it is going to take some work and support to get there! She WILL GET THERE! She has removed any doubt of that! Thank you for being aware of this most difficult experience our dear sister and her family are enduring at this time!
