About the Cause
In the six years since his passing, we have found a number of different ways to celebrate our dear friend Eddie Papalia and his incredible contributions to all of our lives. This fund is designed to continue those efforts and to eventually fund a named scholarship at his alma mater, Haverford College. We hope to raise funds across a number of methods. We are in the process of establishing a 501c3 foundation for this purpose, but in the meantime, 100% of all donations to this account will go towards funding a scholarship in his name and once established, will be sent in its entirety to the foundation. Because we are not yet a charity, though, gifts made to this fund are unlikely to be tax deductible.
About this Fundraiser
This particular fundraiser is connected to my running the 2019 Boston Marathon. Eddie and I were teammates in college and the foundation of our friendship was based on our shared experiences in running and a love for competition. I will be part of Team Eddie, a moniker I hope will be embraced by many of Eddie's friends and former teammates as they themselves seek continued competition and opportunities to support this important cause.
My Running
I have personally completed 7 marathons, with a personal best of 2:29:10 and finishes of 47th in the 2007 Boston Marathon, 24th in the 2007 Chicago Marathon, and 1st USA finisher at the 2008 Berlin Marathon. While much slower now, I am going to use Eddie and this cause as inspiration to recapture some of my earlier running successes.
About Eddie
Edward “Eddie” Papalia III was born in Livingston, New Jersey and lived in Chatham for most of his life. A 2001 cum laude graduate of Newark Academy, he was named male scholar-athlete in his class before attending Haverford College. In college, he was a three-time Track and Field All-American. He completed his stellar career in track and field with a third-place finish in the 800 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in May 2005, coming on the heels of a fifth-place showing in the indoor Distance Medley Relay that winter. His first All-America honor was earned by finishing seventh in the 800 meters at the 2003 Outdoor Championships; his time of 1:50.98 in the preliminary rounds remains the second fastest time by a sophomore in school history. He was the school record holder as part of the indoor 4 x 200 relay. He was a consummate teammate who won four Centennial Conference individual championships in his career while helping Haverford to capture the team championships all four years. Eddie was an Economics major at Haverford and his senior thesis was advised by Professor Anne Preston. As a senior, he was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for the highest level of academic and athletic achievement in a college career, which he used to obtain his master’s degree in environmental management in 2007 from the Nicholas School of Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University. He was an energy and climate policy analyst at Eastern Research Group, a Boston company dedicated to preserving the environment. Eddie had a distinctive way of carrying himself and pursuing his passions that resonated with those privileged enough to know him. He was as modest about his accomplishments as he was a fierce competitor in achieving them. He was a beloved friend and teammate.
