Eddie Franklin with living expenses

Hi! My name is Riley Franklin and I am fundraising on behalf of my dad, Ed (Eddie) Franklin.

Dad has been in the Grey Nuns hospital in Edmonton, Alberta for almost three weeks after collapsing in his home. He had a UTI which lead to a kidney infection and sent him into septic shock causing the collapse. Dad also had an E. Coli infection.

After further testing, doctors found multiple kidney stones, which are infected, as well as two lesions on his neck and one on his brain. He also has Lemierre’s Syndrome; a jugular vein-related blood infection.

Dad has had a catheter placed into his kidney to drain excess fluid. His multiple infections also need to be cleared up before any operations on his kidneys, neck or brain can take place.

The lesion on Dads brain is called a Schwannoma and he has been referred to a neurologist for further investigation.

As of today, November 26, 2024, Dad is one two oral antibiotics instead of the previous four which means some of the infections are clearing up. We talked today and he is a lot more lucid but had to go in for a surgery today to remove the catheter from his kidney. I am unsure as to whether they will be replacing it or moving to removal of the stones.

If you know my Dad, you know he has worked laborious jobs his entire life. Unfortunately his body can no longer keep up. Dad is trying to heal as best as he can and is hoping to get a job that isn’t as strenuous.

Dad’s medical EI ran out in July after his two cataract operations and his shoulder surgery. He has been living off of his savings since and they have started to run out. He is now two months behind in rent. His landlord has been extremely understanding but that won’t last forever. Dad’s rent is $825 a month and after talking with me he feels he could live on $2000 a month.

Dad currently has a social worker who is helping him apply for both long and short term disability income and other income supports. For now, I am hoping to raise money to cover his living expenses for at least three months until he either a) is home and can find a suitable job b) income support has kicked in or c) a combination of both.

As dad and I live 9 hours apart it has been hard to offer direct support to him but I know he has many people who care about him and would want to help. I have his permission to set up this fundraiser. Any money will be e-transferred directly to him—though when I said this he laughed and said “Just send it to my landlord!”.

Any donations are appreciated and will help him cover some of the costs while he is healing. I’m crossing my fingers he can go home soon.

Thank you for listening,
Riley

If you would like to e-transfer Dad directly as go fund me charges fees, please let me know and I can give you his email. Go fund me won’t let me add it here.
