There are profound moments in life that leave footprints on our soul.  There are unforgettable dates and memorable occasions. There are also moments in life that make your ears ring and shock ripple through your body.

Caring, compassionate, kind, loving, hard working  and free spirited are a few words that people use to describe Courtney.  These adjectives illustrating Courtney’s  character, are not just represented in her personality but are demonstrated in all of her life endeavours.

Courtney has worked tremendously hard her whole life - physically and mentally. She has always made health and wellness a priority.  After graduating high school and following a couple options she decided that caring and helping people was her calling in life.  She went back to technical school, upgraded all of her necessary classes and was accepted into the nursing program in 2010. In the fall of 2014 all the sleepless nights studying, stress, sacrifices  and hard work  paid off and she graduated with a  Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  She quickly landed an opportunity right where she wanted to be - in the Allan Blair Cancer Centre.  She is humbled to go to work everyday and give someone the encouragement, strength and support they need.  Her co workers and patients adore her passionate, empathetic and gracious spirit.

A routine eye exam in March of this year has turned Courtney’s life in a direction she never saw coming. On Tuesday, March 24th, 6 days before her 28th birthday and after finishing a day of testing in Toronto, she found out she has Choroid Melanoma (a tumour) in her left eye.  A very rare type of cancer, six in one million.

Courtney is traveling home today from 7 days in Toronto. The Thursday before last Courtney underwent surgery. The surgery consisted of applying a gold plated plaque that emitted radiation seeds over a period of 7 days.   This Thursday they removed the plaque. How much vision she will lose is unknown and whether the procedure worked won't be definitive until a year from now. In the mean time she has to fly to and from Toronto every three months to be monitored.  Waiting for a year is going to be unnerving. However, her support system is strong, her outlook is optimistic and she is looking forward to being able to empathize with her patients even more in the future.

Her friends are setting up this page, despite her reluctance, to support her in the next coming months.  Like I stated, all treatment and follow up will be in Toronto.  Although care is covered, her travel and accommodations will not be. She will also be restricted from work for several months.  That is a staggering amount of time for someone who is trying to pay off $30K in student loans, pay bills, save for a downpayment for a home, live etc.  In this time off we are encouraging her to travel, be free, be happy and take advantage of her best friend living in Australia (a trip she had been planning well before any of this began)

Secondly, we are setting up this page for everyone Courtney has infected with her beautiful soul.  She has an incredible amount of people that have come to know her through working various jobs, (sometimes 3 at a  time), from the gym, University, high school, traveling, her lake…the list of people who love her are endless.  We wanted to give these people the opportunity to reach out.

I want to thank everyone in advance for supporting Courtney in her pursuit to get healthy, have fun and most importantly continue to live the vibrant, adventurous life she has always pursued.

I want to thank you too Courtney, for allowing us into your bubble. For allowing us to feel some sort of peace knowing we can take away a tiny ounce of your stress. You have said several times that you did not want to be a spectacle, a charity case or feel like you would be judged for traveling….But please know, as people who love you as much as we do…we want you to  welcome the sun on your face, the sand in your toes, a back pack on your shoulders and a flower in your hair. We as people who adore you, want nothing more than to see you smile.

We hope that we can gain support…and show our amazing friend how loved she really is.

Love your friends and family.
