Ed Martin Kidney Transplant

Donation protected
My husband Edward Martin was born with a genetic kidney disorder called polycystic kidney disease (PKD).

Since Ed’s diagnosis in early 2003, Ed has been in what is called renal failure, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) for the past nineteen plus years.

Ed was placed on the kidney transplant list at Vanderbilt University Medical Center by his nephrologist in 2016.

During Ed’s five-year wait on the kidney transplant list, Ed suffered a right basal ganglia stroke in 2019 and it was revealed at this time that his
Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) was down to seven. Which means, Ed’s kidneys were no longer functioning and/or adequately filtering his blood and he had to be placed on daily peritoneal dialysis in order to survive.

After a long five years wait on the kidney transplant list (kidney transplant waiting list is anywhere from a 5-8 years in duration), this day, has finally come...

According to Ed’s new transplant surgeon (Dr. Laura Hickman), Ed has been bumped up on the kidney transplant list. Meaning, his transplant can happen at any moment.

With this surgery, comes astronomical medical expenditures. The cost for the immunosuppressant drugs is mind boggling ($6,000 monthly for just one drug).

We are talking about (current and future) medical expenditures exceeding well over one-million dollars (which means more than $200,000.00 for our out-of-pocket expenditures 80/20 split) per calendar year.

No matter how prepared we were/are, nothing has prepared us for this. I am asking friends and family for their help at this time of need. Any donation made will help to offset our out-of-pocket medical expenditures with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

On behalf of Ed and myself, we thank you for your generosity and prayers!!
