Ed Beier Motorcycle Accident Recovery Fund

Ed Beier Motorcycle Accident Recovery Fund

 **Update: 10/26:

Two weeks from today, Ed will have his 5th surgery since the first two he had the day of his accident, August 20th. They will remove his current external fixator and pins, and to install a taylor spatial frame around his ankle and foot. He will have this on for 8 to 12 weeks, adjusting it regularly so his bones can move back into place. He will not be able to walk for the rest of this year and through the winter. This continues to be a long journey to healing and stability for the Beier family. They continue to rely on the kindness of their community. Thank you for keeping them in your prayers and sharing their story.

On Sunday, August 20th, 2023 Ed was riding his motorcycle in Post Falls, ID, attempting to return home to his wife, Molly, and young daughter, Lula, in Seattle, WA. Ed was hit nearly head on by a truck causing him to crash off the side of the road.

Thankfully he was conscious after the crash but knew he had badly damaged his right leg. It took us several hours to even find what hospital he was taken to. He had an initial surgery in Idaho to place pins in his right leg that had presented as a spaghetti noodle upon arrival at the hospital. Stabilizing his leg also created blood clots in his lungs. They placed him on blood thinners and told Molly after the initial leg surgery that there may be permanent nerve damage to his leg.

They made the decision to fly him home to Seattle and he took a life flight to Harborview Medical Center late Sunday evening. The Harborview team took x-rays and discovered broken knee bones, ankle bones, tibia and fibula breaks, a broken heel, and severe soft tissue damage. He had another long surgery the morning of Monday, August 21st to repair blood vessels in his leg. They found one solid blood vessel in the front of his leg and also attempted to repair a vessel on the inside of his foot. The hope is that blood flow in that foot remains stable and repaired so he doesn’t lose any extremities or the foot.

He will be in the ICU between surgeries to monitor his pulse, his leg, and the lung clots. The next surgery will be to repair the knee, ankle bones and the lower parts of his tibia and fibula. The doctor say the soft tissue damage is also very complex. They can expect Ed to remain in the hospital for the next few weeks.

Ed has been the owner and only employee of a successful landscape company for the last twenty years, and this type of leg damage will be extremely detrimental if not career ending for him depending on his recovery and success in any physical or occupational therapy. The cost of the hospital visits, flight to Harborview, future surgeries, rehabilitation, and loss of pay due to inability to perform his job duties is a huge financial burden on the Beier family. We expect Molly will have to take time off work as well to care for Ed as he cannot drive. The Beier family is so thankful Ed survived this accident, but they have the costs of this injury, along with the loss of his income, weighing on them heavily.

Our hope is that your generosity can begin to help them lift the burden. Any amount will be so helpful. We will post updates here as well.

Thanns in advance!

**UPDATE (8/23): Molly received the police report and the truck that hit Ed head on was uninsured. This is devastating and beyond frustrating news as it means getting money from the driver will be a hard and long fight.

Ed his still in the ICU for pain and blood flow management. He had a 7 hour surgery on Monday and is recovering before the next surgery to start repairs on his knee and heel.

***Update (8/25): Ed moved out of the ICU last night! Before he can have the next surgery they are waiting for swelling to go down in his leg. The pain management is a bit better thankfully, too!

***Update (9/6): Ed has had three surgeries so far and remains at the hospital waiting for surgery #4. His stay at Harborview will definitely exceed 4 weeks at this point. This experience is definitely taking its toll on Ed and on our little family, but we are fortified by the continued love and support from our community. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and sharing our story.
