Our hearts hurt for our family and friends in Ecuador.
The death toll of Ecuador's 7.8 earthquake is now over 500. People are trapped under collapsed buildings; others have lost their homes. Electrical lines are down, roads have collapsed, and food and water are scarce. Erick and Santi's immediate family members are safe, but the situation for others is extremely grave.
This tragedy has hit home.
Several of you have asked us how you can help. Thank you for reaching out. We've decided to collect donations to send directly to Cruz Roja Ecuatoriana. We’re hearing that Cruz Roja Ecuatoriana is active in the rescue and recovery efforts in Manta and across the areas of Ecuador hardest hit.
Our donation to Cruz Roja will go towards hygiene kits, food, medicine, and cooking and cleaning supplies. These donations are being sent specifically to the worst impacted areas in Manabi and Esmeraldas.

Because this is an international donation, I don’t think it’s tax deductible.
We appreciate any amount that you can contribute to help us towards our goal. Thank you so much for your support.

For those that don't know, I was a volunteer teacher in Ecuador as part of the WorldTeach program for two years back in 2004-2006. I got to live and work and become a community member in Manta in the province of Manabi. My friends and neighbors and students in Manta were so welcoming to me. They were humble, but at the same time very proud to share with me their beautiful city on the Pacific Coast. I fell in love with Manta and with Erick Palacios. Fast forward 10 years, and Erick and I are raising our family in San Diego, California. Santiago, originally from Santo Domingo, Ecuador, is a friend of ours living here in San Diego now as well, and Santi has joined our campaign to help raise funds for Ecuador.
Ecuador, and specifically Manta, will always hold a very special piece of my heart. This campaign is the very least that I can do to help support the people that have given me something much more valuable.
Mil gracias, amigos.
