Preston, our son, was diagnosed with a rare metabolic brain disease called Menkes during October 2014. When my wife and I first heard the news, after already spending over a week at the hospital, we were in shock. We learned that Menkes is a defect on the X chromosome, which causes the body to lose the ability to absorb copper. Unfortunately, there is no cure and babies born with this disease only have a life expectancy of 3-5 years and are plagued with health problems along the way. Since Preston’s birth in June 2014, he has had to be hospitalized eight times, with each stay lasting over a week. Even through all of this Preston has been a blessing and an inspiration for hope. My wife and I pray everyday for a miracle and that more people will become aware of this disease, so that children who are affected can be diagnosed at an earlier age.
