It is with a heavy heart and eternal sense of optimism that I must share sad news about our teammate Dan Balchen. On Sunday night he had a medical emergency and was airlifted to Swedish Hospital in Denver. He is currently in ICU. The last report is that Dan is stable, but sedated. His brother from Chicago and sister from Italy are by his side. His dear friend, Jim, is coming in from Washington to "encourage him to keep fighting." The Leadville Police Chief told me yesterday (while I was complaining about Dan's stubbornness) that it is his stubbornness that will see him through this emergency, and I know in my heart she is right.
I have known Dan for a very long time, and I am reminded of his strength, determination and yes, his stubbornness. All these qualities will serve him well now as he fights this battle to regain his health and independence. The other thing I know about Dan is that he is fiercely private, and he is probably cringing right now about me sending this brief message. He will just have to get over it, because we are a team, and we care about each other. Please keep Dan in your thoughts and prayers. I will provide updates as I get them.
At this time, Dan's discharge and recovery plan are still unclear. He is still in ICU and he will need time to recover once he gets home. If you are able, please help us remove a little bit of stress from his world.
