Echoes of March

Hi everyone ! I’m Eline Timmermans, a Belgian writer and director currently preparing my next short film, Echoes of March.

This project is born from a simple but powerful question:
What happens when justice doesn’t feel like enough?

  • The Story

Echoes of March follows Fabi, a young woman working at Brussels Airport, as she navigates an ordinary day that carries extraordinary weight. The film doesn’t recreate the violence of March 22, 2016, but instead focuses on its aftermath. The question whether we really need justice in order to move on. Do we really need to find that person to blame, and do we really need the culprits to be punished in order to be able to close a dark personal chapter in our lives? Through her perspective, we explore resilience, dignity, and the quiet strength of moving forward in a forever moving world.

  • Why This Story Matters

Nine years later, the echoes of March 22 are still tangible. For many Belgians, that day remains an open wound, yet our cinema and television have left it largely unspoken. Echoes of March isn’t about reliving trauma or recreating events. It’s about what comes after.

This story fills a gap in Belgian cinema by addressing these questions with honesty, intimacy, and care.

After tragedy, we are often asked to put our trust in institutions. In Belgium, the trial following the 2016 attacks was historic, but it also raised difficult questions. Justice is carried out in a courtroom, by the state, not by us. We can’t play vigilante. We can only wait. But what happens when the sentencing doesn’t feel like enough? The verdict is final, but it its weight lingers in our daily lives. The legal system may close a case, but it doesn’t close the silence, the trauma, or the need for healing.

  • Collaborators

I’m incredibly grateful to already have talented creatives dedicating their time and passion to Echoes of March.

Anushka Melkonian has signed on to play Fabi, our lead character. She is giving her time and talent to bring depth, intelligence, and emotion to this story.

Jules Emile has joined as our Director of Photography, bringing a strong visual eye and a deep commitment to telling this story with honesty.

And even our campaign visuals carry a piece of Brussels with them. The poster features a photograph of the Brussels metro that I fell in love with the moment I saw it. I reached out to the photographer, Fabrice Colson, who generously gifted us permission to use it for the campaign. It’s a reminder that this film is built not just by a crew, but by a community that believes in its message.

More collaborators are joining us along the way. But already, Echoes of March is becoming a project bigger than myself, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

  • Funding

I’m raising funds to help bring this project to life, a deeply emotional story embedded into Belgian history and culture.

This film matters because it reflects something very human: how we carry grief, and how we find hope again. I want to tell this story with honesty, empathy, and care.

The funds will go directly to:
  • Camera and lighting equipment
  • Sound and post-production
  • Meals and transport for the volunteer crew

Every contribution, no matter how big or small, helps us get closer to filming at the end of October 2025. Thank you for believing in independent cinema, and in stories that remind us of our shared humanity.
