My name is Esmae Rothfusz, sister to Candice Rothfusz-Cook (recently married to Roger Cook). Candice has 4 beautiful children: Jak (8 years old), Knox (6 years old), Kye (4 years old) and Elonya (1-year-old).
This is a story, a story about Jak and Candice. Jak is a loving brother, son, grandson, and nephew to many, but to me, he is my special nephew that I like to call my “star”. Candice is a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister who always puts others first before anyone else, especially her kids. Her kind heart, loving personality and funny humour is what makes her so amazing. Both Jak and Candice are courageous, smart, and so brave which is why you can say our family has been so positive about things.
Since August 2015, Jak and Candice have been in and out of the hospital where he has undergone multiple diagnostic tests which have been hard on his body. Jak was diagnosed with Central Diabetes Insipidus in September, which involves poor production of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) that regulates thirst and proper urination. Unfortunately, Jak will have this for the rest of his life and will face the chronic health challenges that come with this rare disease. Once the doctor’s diagnosed him, it was only a matter of time to find out the reason why he wasn’t developing enough ADH.
After many phone calls between Kelowna General Hospital (KGH), BC Children’s hospital and Candice, BC Children’s found it most important that Jak seek care through them as their patient. Consequently, this means that Jak and Candice will be making many more trips to BC Children’s for more testing because the doctor's think it could be a rare type of cancer. During their last visit, doctor's did find lesions in Jak's skull which continues the search of what exactly is going on and determine which type of cancer it is.
It has been a rough couple of months to rule out a diagnosis for Jak, but we are that much closer to getting answers. Jak has a great support system including his loving, supportive dad (Terry Reimer). Not to mention the support of family to hold down the farm fort and watch the other kids while Roger, Candice and Jak are away.
I have set up this fund for family, friends and/or whomever would like to help support Jak, Candice and their family through this rough time. Anything is helpful as they have a long journey ahead of them in commuting back and forth to Vancouver. This would mean so much not only to me, but our family and words can not express how thankful we are.
