What Happened: 1.5 weeks ago my little boy Bruno was attacked by a large dog and suffered may deep bite wounds.
Timeline: The night of the incident Bruno was taken to surgery to have his wounds closed and drains placed. Over the next few days Bruno was at home, bedridden, with my family and I tending to him. Due to the pain and draining wounds, Bruno did not sleep much - and consequently neither did I. Many of my nights were spent changing his pads, watching him, encouraging him to drink liquids, and taking him out in the middle of the night to urinate if needed. Within 24 hours of the attacks, Bruno's bloody drainage had a stench to it and I imagined that infection was inevitable. Despite forced oral antibiotics and a couple of follow ups to the vet, Bruno's status declined. With a severe and worsening infection and large areas of necrotic skin forming (due to trauma from the attack), Bruno was referred to a specialist Thursday last week.
Recent events: Since his arrival at the specialty animal hospital Bruno has gone under anesthesia a couple more times for wound drainage and debridement. Due to the severity of his infection and wounds, Bruno has been admitted in ICU since Thursday night and was placed on negative pressure wound therapy (an expensive but necessary treatment for recovery) the following day.
Current Status (UPDATED 6/3/2020): The hospital updates me multiple times a day and has informed me that Bruno is doing okay. He was taken off the vacuum therapy yesterday and was taken to surgery in attempt to close his wounds and debrided skin. Unfortunately, not all wounds were able to safely be closed as there were still some signs of infection in some areas. Clean wounds were sutured and the rest of his wounds were packed and bandaged. This morning, Bruno's dressings and bandages were changed again. He continues to recieve IV medications and is fairly comfortble. He will have his dressings changed tomorrow morning and will be given clearance to come home with close follow up. His appetite has been down today but we will strive to get it back while he is home later this week. Overall, his infection has greatly improved and could have very well taken a turn for the worse. The doctors taking care of him are very professional and the best of their class. Bruno has received great 24 hour care and I am excited to have him back home soon to continue the healing process.
The issue: Due to the several vet visits, hospitalizations, IV medications, and surgeries... I am officially broke and am asking for help. I have already spent 12k in medical bills and this only covers care into tomorrow. If all goes well Bruno will unlikely need any more hospitalization but will require several follow-up visits during the next week for IV pain medications (and possible sedation$$$) for packing and dressing changes of his tender wounds. While this may cost a few hundred a visit billing will soon end and Bruno is on track for recovery.
For those wondering, I will undoubtedly receive financial support from my family and I will begin to take out debt if necessary as I am focused on minimizing burden on anyone. I am blessed to still be employed during these tough times but because of the swift accruement of bills, and the many other responsibilities I am juggling in life, including my expensive medical school applications, I am asking for your help.
Bruno is only 2 and a half years old, and for those that know him, he still has so much more to show. Please help ease the process
ANY AMOUNT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE :)
