My lifelong best friend and her family who lives in Glen Haven are in the middle of absolute tragedy with the two largest forest fires in Colorado history rage on. They've been displaced multiple times with recent fires as their very worst nightmare unfolds before them.
Husband Jason is part of the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department and been leading the frontlines to battle the Cameron Peak Fire that has been growing and threatening their community. Meanwhile Alison has been on the move since mandatory evacuations last week, along with their two small children Maddie & Sawyer, dogs and cat to seek refuge from the fires. They first relocated last week into Estes Park YMCA (where both Jason and Alison formerly worked), moving as many personal belongings from their Glen Haven home into a storage garage as well. They were prepared to set up camp for the next few weeks there until Wednesday night when a second nearby fire, the East Troublesome Fire exploded overnight spreading from 19,000 acres to over 100,000 acres and encroaching upon the Estes Park area. Second mandatory evacuation from Estes has separated the family - with Jason back in Glen Haven continuing to battle the flames that are dangerously close to their home, kids with family friends, while Alison tries to yet again salvage and move whatever possible into safety. We've been able to locate a home on VRBO that Alison, her children and pets and another family can all be together while the fires are now simultaneously threatening their home, and Estes Park (where they had moved their personal belongings and can no longer get back in to recover).
The East Troublesome Fire has grown to more than 188,000 acres and is 4% contained. The Cameron Peak Fire, largest in CO history has burned over 200,00 acres and is 56% contained.
As of Saturday morning, Alison is prepared for the worst. "Today is going to be a devastating day." With 60-80mph winds forecasted, both of the fires are closing in on everything this family has. Alison is in the middle of the family's 5th move from the forest today, with dogs, cat, kids in tow. Jason continues to fight the fires. The immediate expenses of temporary lodging, meals, gas are a strain on this essentially one income family. But the long term effects of what these fires will do potentially to their home, personal belongings and the recovery process are unfathomable. Alison's home cleaning business for homes that may not be left standing after the fires subside is in jeopardy. They will be faced with unforeseen out of pocket expenses while they await the end of the fires, and the future is uncertain.
They are part of an incredible community that is banding together right now to help share resources, support and help one another get thru this. This relief fund will not only help Alison's family but will also bleed into helping others experiencing this same tragedy.
While I am located a thousand miles away in Wisconsin, I cannot unsee what tragedy my lifelong best friend is going thru and I have to help. She has her hands too full right now with all the moving parts to ask for help herself so it was instinct for me to do whatever I could in the meantime. These funds will be used to provide shelter, food, clothing to the family and help replace anything lost in the fires. They are also such a giving and charitable family I am certain these funds will extend well outside of their own families needs as my loving caring friend Alison continues to reach out to others in her community and band together and help support one another right now.
