On Thursday, December 11th, my sister Emily’s beloved partner, Ian (42), was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. This news has been a devastating shock for our family—especially for their children, Eve (8) and Rye (11). Ian’s cancer is stage 2A and his treatment plan includes chemotherapy, a complicated surgery, and then more chemotherapy. It will be a long and extremely challenging road.
Ian is truly the heart of their home. He built their house with his own hands, cooks nourishing meals for his family, and can fix or make just about anything. He is an artist, jeweler, leatherworker, an extraordinary Papa, and a deeply loving partner. He is also one of the kindest people you could ever meet.
Their family is primarily supported by one income—Emily tutors at Sonoma Academy—and the financial impact of cancer is already looming. Emily will need to take time off to care for Ian and their children, and Ian must be able to focus fully on treatment and healing.
Having faced breast cancer myself last year, I know firsthand how many expenses arise that insurance does not cover: travel to appointments, parking, lodging, supplements, supportive therapies to manage side effects, home help, and the everyday costs of keeping a household running.
Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease their burden and allow them to focus on what matters most—Ian’s recovery and their family’s well-being.
Thank you for holding them in your hearts and for any support you are able to offer during this incredibly difficult time.
With deep gratitude,
Hannah
