First one sudden loss, now another. Two weeks ago, my sister’s beloved dog passed away suddenly after an expensive vet visit. Her other dog, Bailey, had been inseparable from him and was clearly grieving.

This afternoon, my niece’s girlfriend brought Bailey to my house to play with my dogs, hoping it might lift her spirits. In a tragic moment, Bailey slipped out the gate and crossed the street—right as a man in a large black truck came speeding by. He struck her and drove away without stopping.
