Easing Cassy's Burden After Meeko's Loss

My sister would never do this which is why I’m going to ask for help for her.

My sister just moved out from California to Ohio to live with us while attending nursing school. She moved out here this last summer with her bengal kitty, Meeko.

Both her & Meeko have adjusted to living in Ohio & she is fully into the nursing program while doing lashes on the side when she’s available. She’s currently in between jobs & starts her new job today.

However, Meekos health rapidly declined within the last month. He was a perfect, healthy kitty with a little heart murmur. He started to lose weight & then lost his appetite completely. She’s taken him to a wonderful local vet here in Canal Winchester where they did a full work up on him. His white blood cell count was high as well as his protein globulin. The vet suspected FIP (which if you’re unfamiliar, it’s a fatal disease. However! A vaccine has slowly just been released). The only way to get the vaccine was through FIP Warriors.

The vet suggested an ultrasound to help check his heart murmur but to also help determine if he truly had FIP as he wasn’t showing the clinical symptoms.

The ultrasound tech was unable to find anything that could correlate why & how his health was declining. The vet suggested the group FIP Warriors where she determined that Meeko possibly had the dry version of FIP which is a lot more rough than the wet version. Cassy reached out to the FIP Warriors, sharing her concerns for Meeko. At this point, he could barely walk straight & would fall off the bed when trying to get done. He was showing neurological problems & his right eye started to get cloudy, bloody, & his pupil was dilating. The FIP Warriors were able to get him the FIP vaccine ASAP.

She was able to get the vaccine & administered the first dose. At this point, he was on FIP meds, an antibiotic & a pill to help increase hunger, as well as prednisone. After a couple days, his health was a rollercoaster. Some days, he would eat & get up to walk around & we would think he was getting better. Other days, it was like nothing was helping him.

Yesterday, while she was at work, I checked on him & found him under her blanket which is a pretty normal thing for him. He usually comes out when you call his name. However, I lifted the blanket & he slowly would back up into the blanket which was odd. I thought maybe the light was hitting his eye so I let him be.

I checked on him later & he was in the same spot. I picked him up to bring him to his water & food to help encourage him to eat or drink but would slowly sniff around & then just sit there. His right eye looked even worse than before & the cloudiness started moving to his left eye. His right eye was so dilated, it was pretty much all pupil.

Cassy came home from work & was really concerned about his right eye so she decided to call Med Vet which is an ER Vet. They told her that she needs to bring him in ASAP.

The vet took him back for an examination thinking he had FIP. The vet looked over his previous bloodwork & noticed his calcium levels with everything else & suspected he had Lymphoma. This news was heartbreaking for Cassy. He would have to start chemo treatments which are already taxing on the body & with Meeko’s current health, we weren’t sure he would even make it through his chemo treatments as he already lost a lot of weight & was weak.

Cassy ultimately had to make the hard decision last night (2/13) to euthanize Meeko. It was extremely unexpected & she is completely heartbroken. That was her baby.

We looked back at photos at the beginning of January & he looked perfectly healthy. It’s crazy how it just happened sooo fast. He just turned 7 years old & should’ve had more life to live.

As a full time nursing student, she’s already stressed as it is & to lose her baby on top of that has been a lot. I hope to lessen to the stress for her by simply just helping raise money to put towards the vet bills for Meeko so she can grief him without having to worry.

If you can help in any way you can, it’d be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much! ❤️
