An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Jajarkot & West Rukum areas on Friday night, Nov. 3rd, 2023, at 11.47pm local time. As of Sun Nov 5:
- In Chiuri village in Jajarkot district, at least 105 people were confirmed dead.
- In Rukum district, another 52 were killed
- There were 184 people injured
- Thousands of homes have been completely damaged and the death toll is expected to rise
The needs are great in this rural part of Nepal. We found in 2015 with Nepal's largest earthquake that many children were Orphaned and some of our board members personally helped orphaned children.
We are meeting as a board and discussing various ideas. But we wanted to start this fundraising effort so that we also could estimate the size of impact we could make. Our ideas include:
- Helping children where the primary breadwinner has been lost
- Help specifically with costs for schooling (example: ~$600/yr ($50/month))
- The goal is to KEEP THESE KIDS IN SCHOOL, where they are at risk
We are setting a goal of raising in the range of $6,000 to $10,000 to help the children. If we help in schooling costs, we can help at least 10 children for 1 year with $6,000. We may help some children where both parents have passed in a larger capacity. While the earthquake has impacted few districts of far western remote areas of Nepal vs the much more drastic earthquake of 2015, the need is great.
Our board has been involved in multiple discussions since Saturday morning. We will be updating this Gofundme page as our plans become more definitive.
For many years, Empower Nepal Foundation has supported in disaster relief and projects to empower those in Nepal. During COVID, when we needed some urgent medical devices, we successfully raised over $4,600 USD on Gofundme and additional monies of over $20,000 USD for medical equipment.
