Earth workshop: Tzedakah to honor Deborah Slocum
Donation protected
a life that inspires good deeds was truly a life well lived
In Judaism, one is often called to do tzedakah - an act of service - by dedicating a teaching to honor the memory of one who has departed.
my mother, who always encouraged my love of art and the creative process, loved gardening and earth art - a movement that started in the 1970s where artists looked to the natural world for materials and embedded these artworks in the environment. An adventurer at heart, she once made a pilgrimage to Quemado, NM to visit The Lighting Field, a work of land art by Walter De Maria
In her honor I would like to request your support in fundraising for an Earth Art workshop that will be held for fifteen Haitian youth ages 11 - 16 in the rural border region of Haiti during the month of March. Funds raised will be used to pay a teaching artist, rental of classroom space, meals for the students, room and board for the teaching artist, materials including digital cameras and projectors, and costs of producing an exhibition of the final works.
As an alternative, or in addition to supporting this page artworks largely by mid-career Haitian artists are available for sale in our Etsy store and all revenue will be dedicated to this teaching. We are also accepting donations of used point-and-shoot digital cameras and portable projectors.
