Eagle Scout Project for Almost Home Animal Rescue

My name is Matthew Beal. I am a Boy Scout, Life rank, with Troop 294 in Farmingville, New York. I am raising funds for my Eagle Scout Service Project – the rehabilitation of a dog run for Almost Home Animal Rescue in Medford, NY.

Almost Home Animal Rescue and Adoption, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose goal is to find each family a dog or cat that makes their home complete. Their mission is to rescue and re-home unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats and to place them into responsible homes.

Almost Home’s animal shelter, located in Medford, has an outdoor dog run that is currently in disrepair. The drainage from the rain is poor. Most of the dog run sits on a concrete slab that is hard on the dogs’ paws. The dog run is contained with a chain-link fence, but it is only partially covered with a tarp. Without privacy, the dogs get distracted and anxious when people walk by. There is also no shade in the area. The paint is peeling off of the exterior wall. The entryway is supported by an old wooden frame that is deteriorating.

My steps to improving the dog run will be:

Painting the walls and fixing the entryway will make the area look nicer. Installing the fresh pea gravel will improve drainage and the texture will be comfortable for the dogs. The privacy screen will prevent the dogs from getting distracted. The canopy will provide shade from the sun, and cover when it rains. A neater, cleaner dog run will make the area more enjoyable for the animals and staff, and provide an outdoor space where people seeking to adopt the pets can meet and greet the animals.

My goal is to raise $4,000 for the materials and supplies needed to complete this project. Any donations, in any amount, are appreciated. All proceeds raised will go to the benefit of Almost Home Animal Rescue and Adoption. Thank you for your support.
