EAA Chapter 32 Needs Assistance Recovering from Destructive Flooding

     EAA Chapter 32 is also known as Spirit of St. Louis Chapter 32 of the Experimental Aircraft Association. It is a 501-c3 non-profit organization. The website can be viewed at www.eaa32.org

     The organization welcomes anyone who in interested in recreational aviation. At the heart of the organization is a great love of flying, building aircraft, education, volunteerism and community service.  The 40178118_1562030173623927_r.jpeg hosts many opportunities each year to reach out to the community and provide educational opportunities for children, in hopes that at least some of these kids will develop a passion for aviation and eventually become pilots, perhaps as their careers.

Examples of educational opportunities offered include:

*Young Eagles-This program provides children from ages 8 through 17 the opportunity to experience flight in a general aviation airplane while educating them about aviation. Parents are welcome to fly with their children if they wish. The program is offered free of charge to the children and their families. Chapter volunteer pilots incur related costs. Chapter 32 has flown over 8,500 children in this program since the program began.

*Aviation Badge Workshops- This program provides children participating in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and  American Heritage Girls to learn about aviation and earn their respective Aviation Badges. There is no cost to the children or their parents for this program. Many children have earned their aviation badges through Chapter 32.

Opportunities for adults;

* Flying Start and Eagles programs introduce adults over 18 years old to the world of flight with introductory flights and mentoring.

* Aircraft builders and pilots are supported by the Technical Counselor and Flight Advisor programs.

EAA Chapter 32 operates out of a building located at Smartt airport in St. Charles County, Missouri (near St. Louis). The building, known as the Aviation Resource Center (ARC), is 4,000 square feet. In June 2019 the airport experienced a catastrophic flood, with Mississippi River water as high as 4 feet inside the building. Although the chapter took steps to minimize the impact, the building and its contents incurred thousands of dollars in damage.

Some of the damage includes but is not limited to:

·       Exterior building siding

·       Drywall and insulation that was flooded

·       Loss of furniture, supplies, tools and equipment.

·       Loss of fundraising equipment and supplies.

·       Loss of safety equipment.

·       Damage to utility systems.

     Chapter 32 members are currently working to remove and repair damaged items, clean and disinfect the building and restore it to an operable condition.

     Because damages exceed their resources, the chapter is requesting $15,000.00 through the Go Fund Me program. EAA Chapter 32 will use the money for materials and supplies while volunteering to do as much as possible of required manual labor.  100% of the funds raised will go toward repairs of the building and refurbishment of damaged and destroyed furnishings & supplies.  Any surplus funds will be used for youth education programs.
