Hola, soy Leti.

Hello, I’m Leti. At 19, in my second year of Nursing school, I received a diagnosis that left me in shock: lupus with severe, treatment‑refractory kidney damage. I spent a month hospitalized, surrounded by machines and tests that made me question my future. Over this decade of highs and lows, I’ve endured endless days of joint pain and skin lesions. I lost my hair to the treatments, suffered visible wounds on my face, and endured stares that hurt more than the scars themselves.

My doctors insisted, “Leti, your health is at risk; the stress of clinical rotations and night shifts could trigger a serious lupus flare. It might be wisest to take a break from your studies.” My mother, seeing me tremble with pain after a round of tests, would sit by my side in that cold hospital room, holding my hand and, through tears, urging me to think of my life, my kidneys, my future. My father encouraged me to never abandon my dreams, even when my body felt too weak.

Despite constant relapses and aggressive treatments, I never stopped working or studying. I pushed myself to attend every clinical practice, despite extreme fatigue and side effects. Their advice weighed heavily on me, and there were days when I almost let go of my dream. Yet each morning, waking with my stomach knotted by uncertainty, I’d close my eyes and picture my scrubs, my white coat, my calling. I learned to ration my strength: studying in short bursts and celebrating each small step as if it were a great achievement. Step by step, between medical care and lessons in resilience, I refused to give up my dream until, diploma in hand and heart swelling with pride, I proved that neither lupus nor fear could outmatch my determination.

My doctors have been fundamental pillars, searching for solutions, giving me hope, and walking me through every new option. Today, a door of hope has opened: an innovative treatment in Spain that could improve my quality of life and restore my energy to work as a nurse.

When they told me about this groundbreaking treatment in Spain, I felt, for the first time in years, a spark of hope ignite within me. It was as if, after every jab of pain and every sleepless night of doubt, someone finally reached out and said, “Keep going your dream of caring for others is still possible.” That promise renewed my strength to plan my trip, organize my life, and believe again that, despite everything, I can achieve every goal I set.

My dream is to return to caring for others with the same passion as always, to thank my parents for their tireless support, and to show other women that it’s possible (Lupus attacks 9:1 female:male ratio and in our early teenage years). This is not only my chance to keep fighting but also my way of reaching out to every persona facing a similar battle against autoimmune diseases.

I invite you to be part of this campaign not only with your financial support but by sharing my story so it reaches someone who may feel alone and hopeless. Every act of help becomes a message of courage: it shows that, together, we can turn fear into motivation, pain into solidarity, and despair into new possibilities. Supporting this cause is a collective embrace that encourages other women to stand tall, believe in their strength, and never give up on their dreams.

Every contribution brings me closer to that dream.

If you can’t donate, sharing my story with your network is just as valuable. Thank you for reading my story and for helping build this new beginning. Together, we can make a difference.
