Will's Medical Needs!

Will was hospitalized at the beginning of April for a severe lung infection and paralysis from his left hip and down to his left toes. During this time it was diagnosed that he has multiple lesions throughout his lungs that have spread into his spine. A lesion on his spine is causing paralysis down his left lower extremity and decreased sensation. Unfortunately, due to poor staffing by the hospital he was at and Will's condition, he did not receive the adequate help and positioning he needed. Will developed a Stage 4 pressure ulcer over his tailbone. If you are in the medical field you will know and understand how devastating that is. For anyone else this means that he was not repositioned or cushioned well enough and he developed a sore that not only went through his skin, but went through all layers: fat, muscle and down to the bone. He developed a bone infection from this and had to be treated with more IV antibiotics and painful dressing changes and multiple wound vacuum-assisted closure devices.  He now is at a long term acute care facility still being treated in Houston.

My mom, Mary, has been down in Houston since the end of Week 1 of Will's hospitalization. She has been staying at Will's apartment, living day to day and extending his lease week to week. Luckily, his apartment managers have been wonderful. Will was going to move back to Oregon in May and had put in his notice to move out back before he went into the hospital. But now as we push into month 6 of this they have said my mom needs to sign a month to month and pay the month to month cost- Adding an extra $300 on top of his already monthly life/medical expense list. His stuff actually has been picked up by movers and my mom is basically "inside camping" in the apartment.

I am trying to get both of them home to Oregon. Where we can get him care he needs, has more family close by to help out with daily functioning and my mom has her home. The problem lies in the fact of this wound. If he was without this wound, he probably wouldn't be in the hospital any longer and we could have gotten him home on a plane in a normal seat. But because of the tailbone being the location of this wound, one cannot sit upright for more than 15 to 20 minutes without disrupting the fragile wound base and fresh cells or cause Will severe pain. Our number one plan was going to try and see what a medical flight would have been but when I was quoted at $26,000, we gave up on that thought.  With this knowledge, we know the only way we will be able to get him home will be either A) Buy out a row of airplane seats for him and be able to position and medicate him correctly after the initial take off and have both my mom and myself on the flight too. Or B) rent a mini-van or RV and drive both my mom and my brother back to Oregon. We know either plan will have expenses (rentals/flights/medications/etc.). And we know the time from now to execution of the plan is going to have increased costs that we were not expecting (apartment rent/food/day to day $$).

I put this Gofundme campaign together to try and get enough money to make this move happen sooner rather than later and to help my brother and my mom out and get them HOME. If you can contribute or even post this campaign to your page and see if others can contribute, it would mean the world to me and my family and we will be forever grateful to you for helping get our family back together and help my brother with his condition at home.
