Avery's Road to Recovery

Avery Nussbaum is a happy, sassy (as her mom says) 16 month old whose smile can light up a room. Keeping up with her older sister Aubrey (6), and brother Colton, (3) is a challenge she is always up to. Now at 16 months old, she is starting the fight of her life and needs our help.

On August 15th Avery woke up and went to the babysitters like any normal day. That afternoon, when picked up, she began having difficulty breathing. She was taken to Southeast Missouri's ER in Cape Girardeau, MO where she was thought to have a virus. Within a matter of a few hours Avery's status rapidly worsened. The viruses (which were later diagnosed as parvovirus, enterovirus and rhinovirus) attacked her heart, and she was urgently airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital with an acute onset of myocarditis. She was admitted into CICU and placed on an ECMO (a machine that is able to take over the work of the lungs and the heart). For the next 5 days Avery was in CICU with the goal of allowing her body time to recover. On the day she was scheduled to be taken off the ECMO machine a brain scan was performed and came back showing that Avery had suffered two strokes, one small and the other large. After reviewing her brain MRI the doctors have determined that Avery will have a tough road ahead of her, with many hurdles to overcome.

Avery is an amazing little girl and the road ahead will place a huge financial burden on her family. Between hospitals stays, travel to and from St. Louis, time off work and care for Avery the bills will add up quickly. Avery is starting the fight of her life, and by donating we can be a part of her road to recovery.

100% of the donations go directly to Avery's family. Let's make sure this family knows they are not traveling this road alone.
