Mai Vo is a very special person and I am lucky to be able to call her  my friend.

At the age of seventeen,  Mai's son Thuy, a happy, healthy adolescent had an accident and suffered a spinal cord injury. His life was abruptly interrupted and is now a paraplegic.

After his accident,  he spent a month in the hospital, and three months in rehab. For the remainder of his junior year he had to be home schooled. He attended his senior year for a short time but because of an infection due to poor circulation,  he had to return to being home schooled.

A spinal cord injury coupled with an infection made for a very long, grueling recovery.

With the help of his family,  Thuy is currently attending UCSD as a mathematics-computer science undergraduate planning to graduate this year.

Most of his time is spent at home due to the fact that he has to rely on family members to transfer and drive him anywhere he wishes to go. This entails transferring him from his wheelchair to the car using a transfer board and from the car to his wheelchair in the same manner.
Mai's brother helps out getting him to and from classes.  But when  he is unavailable,  Mai is needed,  which typically means missing a day or more of work. Time away from her job has a dramatic impact on the household.

Thuy turned 30 in December and dreams of getting a job so he can live an independent life .
To do this, he'll need a wheelchair accessible van which Mai simply cannot afford at this time.
She works at a salon and is the sole provider for the family.  Her husband has Alzheimer's disease so Thuy depends on Mai for everything.

I accompanied Mai and Thuy  to a mobilty dealership where they could discuss the possibility of purchasing an accessible vehicle.
Any hopes they had of making a purchase were shattered when they learned that the cost of a 2008 van would be at least $44,000.00.
This is simply not possible with Mai's income.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you and God bless!!
