Elane Dickenson

On February 28, Elane Dickenson was called to the Emergency Room after an appointment to check her blood work, and was told she needed to be flown out of Wallowa County due to complete kidney failure. Unfortunately the airports in Joseph and Enterprise were closed due to weeks of non-stop snow fall, so Elane was rushed by ambulance to Baker City where she was then airlifted to Providence Portland Medical Center. Elane arrived with some of the worst numbers the ICU doctors had ever seen. After emergency dialysis and getting her stabilized, she was diagnosed with advanced Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the blood. Within 24 hrs of diagnosis, Elane started chemotherapy treatment. This type of cancer is not curable, but there is a treatment, and the oncologist hopes that he can give her another 10 years of life.
Elane was a single mother and raised two amazing children completely on her own. Those kids have been by her side every minute of this. Growing up, Elane was an icon in her community, documenting the stories of businesses, school performances, successes, sports wins, family tragedies, and the day-to-day life in a small town. Throughout my 30 + years of knowing Elane, she has been a constant source of support for me, showing up with a smile and a camera to every school event offering words of encouragement in a manner that made me feel exceptionally special. She has been the record keeper for her large immediate and extended family with her beautiful pictures and photo books, stories of childhoods, marriages, and funerals. Elane has a strong circle of people in her life, and many of her closest friends she has had since adolescence.
Elane has Medicare and some supplemental insurance, but it will not fully cover a life-saving flight across the state, emergency dialysis, and a lifetime of Chemotherapy treatment. The coverage and financial need at this point is still unknown. I’ve entered a goal, but any amount will help her. Elane lives a simple life in the small town of Joseph, Oregon on a modest retirement from her job as a newspaper reporter. I do not want to see Elane lose her home to the financial burden of medical expenses. I don’t want her to worry about losing a land that she’s worked her whole life to pay for; a house that will need maintenance and repairs while she spends the year in Portland receiving treatment. Elane has lived a life of integrity and self-sufficiency. While she fights for her life, I’d like to rally around her and invite her community, family, and friends to do so as well, so that finances are not a focus or a use of her strength. Please join me in making a donation to support Elane Dickenson.
