Doing something purposeful and impactful with my education, and in my life, matters to me. As a part of this goal, I want to take a big step out of my comfort zone this May, by engaging in an immersive social entrepreneurship work service course. As a part of my Global and International Studies major through The College of Wooster, I will be participating in the Global Social Entrepreneurship Program, a two part experience: the first a semester long course at the college, the second, a six week long field study in Bangalore, India this summer.

I am currently a sophomore at the College of Wooster. I intend to graduate with a Global and International Studies Major, French minor. I chose the Global and International Studies major because of it’s unique values that focus on global awareness and three interdisciplinary areas of study: political science, history, and economics. This combination allows me to be exposed to multiple fields that overlap and provide a holistic education attuned with the increasingly globalized world.

An integral component to completing this major is studying abroad. I was lucky enough to discover the Global Social Entrepreneurship Program (GSE). GSE is not only comprised of the same components embodied in my major, but also focused on my own interests surrounding social justice and global poverty. Participation in this unique program is only offered once every three years at Wooster; therefore I jumped at the chance to engage in this rare opportunity.

GSE is a unique venture that enables its participants to work closely with other students, professors, and professionals of similar dedications both within and beyond Wooster’s borders. By partaking in this program, nine other students and I have been selected by our professor, Dr. Amyaz Moledina, to engage in a semester long seminar targeted to prepare us for a six-week excursion to Bangalore, India this summer. We will be collaborating with nonprofits in Bangalore to identify problems and possible solutions to the complicated issues associated with poverty and education.

In summary, GSE’s vision is to achieve “global citizenship and entrepreneurship for the global good” by implementing an intercultural, intergenerational, experiential-learning, problem-based experience with two components – an on-campus seminar and an international experiential-learning consultancy.

As a sophomore, I will be entering into the workforce in two years, so gaining this kind of experience is of the utmost importance to me. The development of my innovative, critical, and interpersonal thinking skills will be challenged and strengthened through this program and aid me in finding a career that best utilizes my abilities.

With that, part of this program’s experience is to learn how to fundraise for social entrepreneurship causes. In this case, the target is addressing poverty and education in India. My challenge then, within this program, is to create a budget and identify funding sources to support my participation, future GSE students, and the local social entrepreneurship program at the College of Wooster.

In consultation with my professor and fellow students, we will work creatively to fundraise on Wooster’s campus as a team but also individually.

I need to raise $2,714 more, in order to cover the travel and program expenses.

Any contributions you can make to this transformational educational opportunity for me would be greatly appreciated. Ideally, I need to meet this goal by May 1st.
