The lovely home of Salia Joseph, Keisha Charnley and Terri Bell has been devastated by a fire that happened on Tuesday evening. All of their belongings have been destroyed and they cannot return to their home. Please join me in contributing any money/gifts/support for these amazing Indigenous women who so beautifully shape our communities.
During the fire, Moon passed away. She was a beautiful companion, friend and family member of the household, whose presence will be so devastatingly missed during this hard time. Please hold Moon in your thoughts and put some tobacco down for her. We all love Moon more than our hearts can bear. At this time, we need to hold up these women who are carrying this loss.
These women are known as matriarchs in our communities. They work tirelessly as gentle leaders. Their home was a place that was cultivated to support the work that they do and their community around them. Anyone who has visited their home knew it as a safe space full of good medicine, beautiful art, laughter and light. A sense of home is integral for these women to continue doing the challenging work that they do.
We are asking for monetary donations to support the practical costs associated with recovering from the fire. These costs include: temporary accomodation costs, money for basic furniture such as beds, dressers, table, etc., money for clothing, money for a new damage deposit for a new home. Anything helps!
I will also be collecting any gifts or gestures of support you may wish to offer. Many of the items that were lost in the fire cannot be replaced. These include artworks done by family members and friends, medicines, drums, regalia, ceremonial blankets, books and photos. Please consider gifting anything that may contribute to a sense of home that these women deserve. For example, gifting a blanket, a jar of fish, a piece of art or perhaps making a care package.
