I have a dear friend in need. There is a lot about the situation that I can’t disclose, but if you know me, you know that I wouldn’t ask for help unless it was necessary.
My friend is going through an unexpected and very contentious divorce. She has one young son, and they need a place to stay. She has no family in the state where she lives, and the judge won’t let her move with her son to California to live with her family during the pendency of the divorce. She has no close friends in her state willing to take her in; her husband kept her very isolated. She has called dozens of shelters, but they are not taking anyone in because of Covid-19.
Her husband has hired one of the best and most aggressive family law firms in the state, while she remains unable to hire an attorney. (I’m not licensed to practice law where she lives.) So, on top of needing a place to live, she really needs an attorney. She needs a voice. She needs someone to protect her and her son in these legal proceedings. She desperately needs to obtain orders for child support and alimony, which she has been trying to get for several months now.
She has a restraining order against her husband and social services has been involved. It’s all very overwhelming, intense, and stressful, and it came out of nowhere for her. Having good legal representation will take a HUGE burden off her shoulders.
She is a strong woman with a good head on her shoulders. She trusts in God. She has a college degree (though she hasn't worked in over 10 years). She’s searching for a job (in a state very hard hit by the pandemic). She is going to be okay eventually---better than okay, I believe. But right now she is just browbeaten, having been in an abusive relationship for over 10 years, and she is financially destitute. She needs help to get back on her own two feet to provide herself and her son.
I know our inboxes and newsfeeds are flooded with GoFundMe accounts right now, with so many people in need and suffering tragedies this year. But from one single mom on behalf of another, I ask you to give and help me show this wonderful soul that she’s not alone.
"For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me." Then these righteous ones will reply, "Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?" And the King will say, "I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!"(Matthew 25:35-40)
