Mia’s Surgery & Fight Against MS

Hi, my name is Kiera Malone and I want to take a moment to tell you about my friend, Mia.

Mia was diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis in 2017. Multiple Sclerosis for those that don’t know is a disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system.). In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. MS causes the loss of body functions and sometimes results in numbness, slurred or delayed speech, vision problems, difficulty walking, and paralysis all of which Mia has gone through over the past 7 years. In 2020, the current medication Mia was on was not working as she was again experiencing more of the above-listed problems and was then told after an MRI and new findings that she had Primary Progressive MS which essentially means her MS with time is gradually worsening and not all may know, but there is no cure for MS. She has since with guidance from her neurologist changed medications 2 times which now brings us to current state.

On April 22nd, during a routine MRI & treatment session, she found out that she has excess fluid on her spine that has caused a leak leading to some inflammation in her brain. Due to this, she will need to undergo surgery. After that, she will be in recovery that requires some physical therapy to get her back to normal. With this procedure, Mia will be able to get back to doing the things that she loves.

I have had the pleasure of becoming one of Mia's best friends. She is one of the most selfless people I know. She is an inspiration and one of the strongest people I know. Mia often fights her battles silently, yet is always the first person to step forward & help others professionally and personally. She is beating the odds against her and this surgery will continue to help my friend live this beautiful life God has blessed her with. Mia is not one to ever really ask for help, so I am organizing this on her behalf.

I organized this GoFundMe campaign in an effort to help Mia with her medical expenses between the procedure and physical therapy costs for it is her turn to receive the help and support she continuously provides to others.
