My sweet dachshund Magoo is paralyzed, and immediate surgery is required.
Magoo saw the vet on Aug. 14 for what I thought was a digestive problem. The vet said it was his back and sent me home with an anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxer. The exam took 15 minutes, and was only visual, no tests. I have since learned that 100-percent crate rest is imperative in these cases. This vet never even mentioned a crate. Magoo walked in and out of the clinic. By the next day, his back legs were paralyzed and he was in intense pain.
We saw the amazing folks at Central Veterinary Hospital on Monday. They diagnosed IVDD—Invertebral Disc Disease—and said surgery was Magoo's best bet for walking again. When I said I couldn't afford it, they sat with me for an hour explaining how to go about Magoo's 8-week, 100-percent crate rest and pain management plan. With crate rest, Magoo has a 12 percent chance to walk again. With surgery, it is much higher.
Magoo's best window of opportunity is during the first week after paralysis. After that, the percentage of success drops dramatically. I have created a goal of $4,500 for surgery with diagnostics. This is a ballpark figure given over the phone and might be adjusted after a vet consultation to reflect the true amount.
If I do not raise enough in the next few days, the money will go toward vet bills while Magoo is confined, therapy treatments, and a dog cart. If we can't get the the surgery, and if Magoo is walking after crate rest (sadly unlikely), your donations will be re-donated to an animal emergency fund.
