Some know me as Dale, some know me as Dennis. I am fundraising for my wife that I have been with for over 13 years. She has calmed me and stuck with me when I faced difficult times, cooks from the heart, cares and loves the 2 teenagers, Kaylie and Dylan, that I brought into our relationship from the time they were toddlers, she brought us home the cutest, most affectionate dog anyone could ask for, and has always made our house a loving home filled with laughter and spontaneous dances.
Since January 2022, I’ve had the opportunity to be there for Cherish when she endured life-saving surgery and was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colon cancer. Initially, it was found to have spread from the colon, the liver, lungs, some lymph nodes and across the preperitoneal tissue. At the age of 34, the impact was as difficult to absorb as anyone could imagine. Life changed quickly leaving us both wondering how this was even possible.
After a month of recovery from surgery, we decided to relocate Cherish to Houston to be with family in the care of MD Anderson Cancer Center to begin chemotherapy. As her loving husband, I took time from work to move her and meet the doctors but remained living and working in California to keep our insurance going. I temporarily moved into a shared apartment to minimize bills and we would have daily dates over FaceTime and even sleep with our computers facing us. We would sync up shows and movies on streaming platforms to feel like we were still close.
In July of 2022, Cherish would have a 2nd emergency surgery to remove a dangerous tumor and other affected surrounding areas that created a very dark & difficult time get through. I took substantial time away from work to be with her but eventually needed to return back to the Bay. Almost a year living apart had passed when we reunited Cherish, myself, and our dog, Myles, back in California. The 3 of us moved into our own apartment again and transitioned her care to Stanford Medical Center.
Her treatment was resumed and eventually switched to immunotherapy. Later in August of 2023, she was readmitted to Stanford hospital under observation for over a week for another emergency that fortunately did not require surgery. Then earlier this year following scans it was determined that the tumors in her liver had progressed enough to consider changing the approach to a new clinical trial. However, in late June 2024, while enduring the eligibility process before she could begin, her cancer has advanced and become increasingly problematic.
Cherish has once again been admitted into Stanford hospital for a whole month so far. The cancer has spread in other parts of her abdomen causing many complications including new tumors that created obstructions in her intestines, further progression in her liver, abdominal fluid build up, and other lymph nodes were also affected. She has been through a lot of pain and suffering and while no one wants to be tough all of the time, she has shown that her love, her light and her determination are strong enough to continue fighting back. The new clinical trial began on July 17th and we are encouraged that she is responding as well as we could hope and keeping up her spirit.
Being a husband, caregiver, and advocate for my wife, I’ve had to wear many different hats over the past 2 1/2 years. As the sole provider for our family, taking time from work for medical appointments or needs, and other expected & unexpected expenses that happen when your family battles cancer has come with a very impactful effect on our finances. We are the type of people that almost never ask for a helping hand but we had to find the courage to do so for this pivotal chapter. I really wouldn't ask if the help wasn't needed but it is and we greatly appreciate each and everyone who is concerned about Cherish's well being. After careful thought and consideration, we believe that creating an outlet for the special people of our community to help with the expenses of this journey will position us better to be flexible when needed as our experience has shown time and time again that circumstances change quickly.
With your support, it will help us keep up with monthly expenses such as housing, internet and utilities, strict dietary/lifestyle changes, medical and holistic healing methods - not covered by insurance, and transportation expenses. Another difficulty we face is that our vehicle we rely on has very costly repairs that need to be addressed ASAP.
We are asking for any donation amount that you are able to give in order to help my family as we go through this extremely difficult time. If Venmo is preferred, contributions can be sent to: @Dale-Cambre . Zelle is also an option if you have my phone number but please confirm first to ensure the information is correct if needed. Thank you all for your love & support. Please continue to keep Cherish and our family in your thoughts and prayers.
