After a year and a half of battling issues resulting from a car accident, my brother Michael Tiffany had open heart surgery on November 12th. As an outpatient he will have to be on antibiotics, both intravenous and oral, and his insurance will not cover the entire cost. As far as we know, his out of pocket costs will be AT LEAST $350 a week for the next six weeks. That is the main reason I'm asking for any help you can give, but his health issues have resulted in other costs as well. As an example, we're also trying to get him fitted for new eyeglasses for his one good eye that will work on his disfigured face.
If you'd like to hear the whole story of how he ended up needing surgery, read on:
In June of 2017, Michael was involved in a horrendous car accident that he was lucky to survive. He managed to get out of the car as it began to burn but the car and everything in it was destroyed. Due to his head injury, he was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center's Trauma Center that night where they saved his life. He has the use of only one eye and until he can complete reconstruction of his face--a long and costly process--he remains in a great deal of constant pain. Despite this, he continues to be upbeat and carry on for himself and his two adult sons. His injuries have caused him to be hospitalized more than once to treat recurring infections. Most recently, he was hospitalized for sepsis. He was also diagnosed with endocarditis and doctors discovered that an infection had eaten a hole in his heart. Surgeons patched the hole and replaced his aortic valve. He came through the nine hour surgery well but has had some reactions to antibiotics, leading doctors to try to find treatment he can tolerate and also afford. This is the best they've been able to do, despite his insurance coverage.
Michael has worked most of his adult life to support himself and his family. He is, however, unable to bear the cost of necessary treatment on his own. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated!
